Hi, I’m Ben, a psychodynamic counsellor. I offer a space to explore what’s going on beneath the surface—patterns, emotions, and past experiences that may be influencing how you feel and relate today. This is a space for curiosity, not quick fixes. A space to get to know yourself more deeply—not just to ease discomfort, but to understand where it comes from. My approach is best suited for people who are open to longer-term, reflective work. Those who are motivated not just by relief, but by a desire to understand the why beneath their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

My work includes one to one and couples therapy. Face to face is preferred but can offer phone and online therapy. By working together, we can look to identify and explore negative thoughts & feelings that may prompt behaviours that impact your everyday. Additionally, we can work to seek clarity, and sometimes even acceptance around specific situations. Dealing with issues that seem a little overwhelming, while giving you back that sense of control you may have felt you’ve lost.

My specialist areas include depression, anxiety, suicidal feelings, low self-esteem, bereavement, anger, family relationships and cultural identity.
Sometimes the way we feel and respond to events in our lives doesn't fit with how we see ourselves and how we ought to behave. What can seem like a never-ending battle to be better, do more, think more positively and ultimately be happier can leave us more isolated and exhausted. My space is dedicated to helping you give voice to what is happening in your life safely and confidentially. As self-exploration can bring up unexpected feelings, I'm here to support you in that process.

Do you ever feel anxious, numb, or like you’re carrying a weight you can’t quite name? Many of the people I work with describe feeling stuck, distant from themselves, or quietly believing they’re not good enough, a feeling that echoes through their relationships, work, and inner world. Sometimes they’re navigating grief, loss, or a painful ending, or carrying early experiences of neglect or disconnection that have left them feeling emotionally overwhelmed.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
