I counsel Substance Abuse, Complex Trauma and Addiction related issues. We will talk with the purpose of becoming...... "better than well". Addiction is everywhere, both Substance addiction and Process addiction, and they afflict millions. I deal with many types of addictions and inevitably with the underlying trauma found at their roots. Universally it presents with a kaleidoscope of personal and family suffering. It does not have to continue. Healing from complex trauma and addiction is an act of rebellion. It is the process of deciding that your past—no matter what it has involved —does not get the final say about your future.

People come when something isn’t sitting right. Anxiety, overthinking, feeling on edge. Relationships can feel stuck or go round in the same loops. If you’re neurodivergent, everyday things can take more effort than expected. I work with individuals and couples. With individuals, we slow things down and look at what’s actually happening day to day. With couples, I use the Gottman Method, focusing on communication and conflict. I’m a BACP accredited integrative counsellor, trained to Level 6 in supervision and Level 4 in counselling, and I also work as a counselling tutor.

This space may be meaningful for those who experience intense feelings such as shame, guilt, embarrassment or blame, who feel unseen or misunderstood, and who wish to explore identity, shame, power and belonging in a reflective way. Many of the people I work with carry diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, Bipolar Disorder, EUPD, Autism or ADHD. Others may not have a diagnosis but want to make sense of their experiences and find new ways of living. My work moves beyond the medical model, recognising distress as shaped by personal, social and cultural context.

We might all experience times in our life when we're struggling to cope, and when we do, talking our problems through with someone who understands us can be just the thing that lifts the weight from our shoulders and allows us to find a new path forward. Although I try to shy away from labels and diagnosis, I've helped people suffering from anxiety, depression, grief, relationship and anger management issues, and more. It's vital that you feel comfortable talking to your counsellor, and so I offer a discounted first session to help you decide if I'm the right person for you.

It is not at all unusual for any of us to experience a sense of anxiety or depression due to a life event that has caused us to feel “disconnected,” or simply “overwhelmed.” We might experience a bereavement or loss (a job, a relationship, a marriage); or issues may arise related to dating, getting married, or ageing and retirement. Alternatively, we might feel unable to be “ourselves,” or have the desire to nurture other aspects of our personality that seem underdeveloped: a lack of confidence to take risks and engage life, an ability to slow down, or an ability to be honest about our feelings with others. Psyhotherapy can help.

Many of my clients live with chronic pain, long COVID, or health conditions where medical tests haven't provided clear answers. You may have been told "it's just anxiety," even though you know something deeper is wrong. Or your scans came back normal, but the pain, fatigue, dizziness remains very real. You might be grieving the person you were before illness, struggling with the uncertainty of unexplained symptoms, or carrying health anxiety that feels impossible to manage. Your experience is real, and you are not alone. Therapy can help you navigate the emotional toll, rebuild trust in yourself, and find more meaning.

Seeking counselling is brave and necessary step when life is overwhelming. Perhaps you feel continually anxious for no good reason, or experience crushingly low moods too much of the time. The loss of a loved one, or a job can provoke a crisis. Or you may be going through unforeseen change in your life which has taken you into uncharted territory. Most people face relationship difficulties sometimes. Discrimination, abuse or bullying may leave you feeling isolated and helpless. If you want to find strength to face such difficulties, solve problems and renew your sense of purpose and joy, I can help.

Are you feeling anxious, stressed, down, unmotivated? I understand that it can be difficult to know what to do next. I have experience of helping people make sense of these feelings, and find a path to improve their lives. Whether you are feeling depressed, anxious, or struggling with traumatic events, it can sometimes feel like nobody understands, and there is no clear way forward. This can impact your life, and those you care about. I have worked with many people who feel like this, and there is a way forward. I offer in-person session in Oxford, short bus ride from the centre, and there is plenty of parking. Or sessions online.

Sometimes we feel overwhelmed by life,  feelings of anxiety and depression disrupting our wellbeing, making us feel less than acceptable to ourselves and others.  Difficult or traumatising experiences in the past can leave us feeling stuck, alone, fearful or angry. We might be stuck in a flight/flight/freeze response blighting our ability to be in the present moment unable to lean into the people in our lives.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
