Men's Issues Counselling in Wakefield
Hi there, my name's Odin. The idea of counselling can be pretty unsettling. But you've probably done the hardest part already - you're here and you've accepted the possibility you might need some help with whatever's going on for you. That's already a really big and brave step. If you decide you might like to work with me, then we can safely and confidentially, with respect, compassion, empathy and gentle honesty, have a look at whatever's concerning you. Whatever it is, however hard it feels, I'm here if you want to look at it together.

ONLINE: Therapy for those who feel stuck, overwhelmed or misunderstood
I am a Chartered and Registered Psychologist with over 20 years’ experience. I work with individuals who may appear strong on the outside but internally carry stress, shame or a sense of feeling “stuck.” You may have coped alone for a long time, or felt misunderstood in past therapy. I offer a calm, safe space to explore complex feelings and patterns — especially for those who find it hard to trust or fear judgement, and who want to understand themselves more deeply, not just ‘cope’. Therapy here is not about perfection — it’s about honest transformation.

When we carry more than others see, replay the same worries, live with difficult feelings, and keep going despite feeling we're not good enough, it can be exhausting; especially when we're trying to appear okay. Cracks may be starting to show, or perhaps it's simply time to understand what's really going on. I'm Mark, the counsellor behind Ash Roots Counselling, and if any of this feels familiar, we can talk confidentially. There'll be no judgement and no pressure to discuss things before you're ready. You don't need a diagnosis or even know exactly what to say. I'm here to support you in exploring what matters to you.

If you are experiencing anger, anxiety, panic attacks, nightmares, flashbacks, hypervigilance, emotional exhaustion, or a sense of self-doubt, you are not alone. Trauma — including narcissistic emotional abuse — can leave you feeling stuck in survival mode, as though you are existing rather than truly living. Therapy can help you find your way back to yourself.
I am a UK-based psychotherapist specialising in trauma and narcissistic abuse. I work with individuals who are in, or who have already left, abusive relationships and want to break trauma bonds, rebuild self-worth, and heal the impact of long-term emotional harm.

Experiencing major changes can be daunting, frustrating and generate fear alongside self-doubt. If you are looking to make changes, face up to change, explore identity and self-esteem or have reached your limits in one or more life areas then you don't have to face this alone. You will have control over your therapy and gain a voice as well as perspective. If you are willing to make the most of what you learn in therapy then you are more likely to make progress that lasts and changes your life for the better. I also offer Clinical Supervision, outdoor therapy too. I have worked for GPs, IAPT, colleges, hospitals and EAPs.

Men's Issues Counsellors
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
