I have extensive clinical experience of supporting adults presenting with issues which have included; a general sense that things are 'not right' with you, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, low mood, bereavement, experiences of all types of abuse, family difficulties, relationship struggles, low self-worth, personality disorders, feeling stuck or experiencing trauma.
You might feel like you’re holding everything together on the outside, while inside things feel messy, heavy, or hard to make sense of. My clinical masters level informed approach offers a space for you to explore your experiences at your own pace, within a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental environment. Together, we’ll gently make sense of what’s happening for you and begin to uncover what might be keeping you feeling stuck, with the aim of opening up the possibility for change. I centre my work on the belief that healing happens through a genuine, trusting connection, so that meaningful and lasting change can take place.

If you're reading this, you might be feeling stuck in patterns that don't seem to shift — overthinking, struggling in relationships, or feeling like you're not quite yourself. You may have spent a long time putting on a mask just to get through the day, while quietly carrying something heavier beneath the surface. Whatever has brought you here, you don't have to keep carrying it alone.

While there are many different approaches to psychotherapy and counselling, I work principally within the psychoanalytic tradition, a key part of which is to work in collaboration with clients to try to understand the unconscious origins of difficulties affecting our lives in the present. The aim is not to give advice, but rather to support people who have reached a point in their lives where they feel themselves to be facing difficult, sometimes confusing feelings and states of mind, to offer a reliable place to come and be listened to, without fear of being judged, criticised or told what to do.

Hello there. When we meet, I'll be interested in listening to your story and more importantly what brings you to therapy. Perhaps you are looking for some sort of peace within yourself or with your situation. Maybe you don't feel right and haven't done for a while but don't feel able to change. Sometimes life can be difficult to cope with. Therapy gives you the opportunity to slow down and reflect upon where you are at. It is a good way to check out how you really feel and the source of your discomfort. If you are looking for change then I will empathically support you through that process.

Starting counselling can be a bit scary, but living with unresolved problems is probably much worse. I believe that conditions such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and addictive behaviour signal that something is preventing us from thriving. Recognising something in your life that you want to change is the most crucial step. I offer sessions online and also face-to-face in both Bristol & London. I also offer walking therapy to existing clients, a fantastic way to achieve therapeutic results.

I am a qualified CBT and integrative therapist experienced working with anxiety, depression, generalised anxiety, shyness, phobia, health anxiety and OCD.
Hi I'm Matthew. My style is warm and free of judgement. It’s often easier to talk to a confidential person unconnected to your family or friends. I work with anxiety and depression, relationships, loss, abuse, self-esteem, anger, social anxiety or those who are stuck. Improvement comes from insight, new behaviours, understanding and acceptance but also from stepwise, practical change. If requested I can work in a more active and future focused way with the current advice, tools, exercises and activities supported by the evidence base.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
