Welcome. You've taken the first step. I believe the genuinely supportive presence of another is invaluable; particularly one who is removed from our everyday life, and thus can listen with a completely open attitude. It feels particularly good to be received in this way; our guard can finally drop and in so doing we learn new things about ourselves. There's no deeper way to self-understanding than this. We change to the degree to which we can, unflinchingly, look at ourselves in this way. My aim is to facilitate this process by helping to provide such a space.

While there are many different approaches to psychotherapy and counselling, I work principally within the psychoanalytic tradition, a key part of which is to work in collaboration with clients to try to understand the unconscious origins of difficulties affecting our lives in the present. The aim is not to give advice, but to support people who have reached a point in their lives where they feel themselves to be facing difficult, sometimes confusing feelings and states of mind, to offer a reliable place to come and be listened to, without fear of being judged, criticised or told what to do.

Currently I have availability for group, not for 1-2-1. Hi, my name’s Ed, I’m a Therapist working in Twickenham, West London, and online nationally. I work with people experiencing a wide range of difficulties from many different backgrounds, everyone’s story and reason for coming to therapy are different but all are equal. I offer both long and short term individual therapy, generally the length of therapy is something that we would discuss in our first session. In the case of longer term therapy we would frequently review as the therapy progresses to consider what work remains and when might it be appropriate to conclude therapy.

Hello and welcome. I'm a non-judgemental therapist who offers a confidential space where you can feel safe, understood and trusted as you start to explore the reasons why you feel the way you do. I have considerable experience working with anxiety, depression, panic disorder, family/relationship issues, loss, low self-esteem, work-related stress, and addictions (alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex and internet). I have many years experience of working with 12-step programmes. People come to counselling for many differing reasons. You may have recently experienced a crisis in your life, such as bereavement, loss of a relationship, trauma or illness. Or perhaps you are less clear about why you are finding it hard to cope, you might be feeling anxious, stressed or experiencing unpredictable emotional swings but not be sure about why this is happening.

I'm here to help you get different results. Whether you're experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, anger or low self-esteem, we can work it out - sometimes within just 4 to 6 sessions. Maybe you've already identified some repeating patterns in your life that lead you where you don't want - or like - to be; maybe you feel like a puppet on strings, knowing unseen forces are pulling you but unable to identify quite what they are and thus break free? I'll work with you on your behavioural patterns, starting with identifying them (either you can explain them to me or we can identify them together) then looking at their sources and identifying ways of breaking free of them.

You may have reached a point where you are looking for greater stability and clarity in your life and your relationships. I am interested in everything about you that sheds light on your problems and how you might cope better. My job is to bring your awareness to all of who you are so you can start living spontaneously through creativity rather than habit. I keep a good balance between challenging and supporting my clients. By working creatively and collaboratively with you, I hope to breathe fresh life into your outdated narratives and turn dramatic life moments into important opportunities for meaning-making and personal growth

Hi I'm Matthew, a qualified CBT, integrative and psychodynamic psychotherapist. My style is warm and free of judgement. You may have problems you cannot explain to a friend or family member and need a third perspective. I work with anxiety and depression, relationships, loss, abuse, betrayal, self-esteem, anger, or those who are stuck. Improvement comes from insight, understanding and acceptance but also from stepwise, practical change. If requested I can work in a more active and future focused way with the current advice, exercises and activities supported by the evidence base.

Starting counselling can be a bit scary, but living with unresolved problems is probably much worse. I believe that conditions such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and addictive behaviour signal that something is preventing us from thriving. Recognising something in your life that you want to change is the most crucial step. I offer sessions online and also face-to-face in both Bristol & London.

There are many reasons for seeking support, whether you are experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, loss, low self-esteem, fears, feeling overwhelmed or questioning the direction of your life – therapy offers a non-judgemental, safe space to work through the challenges of life. Therapy is not about advice or assumptions. It is about having a confidential space to explore why your life feels like it does and offers hope for change.

I provide an integrative counselling experience. This means I utilise aspects of several models of therapy to suit individual circumstances. It is unrealistic to expect one model of therapy to work for everyone therefore, having access to several models provides an approach that may be tailored to each individual's needs. Therapy should be a collaborative experience where we work together to find the right solutions. In doing so, I hope to find long-term answers for those tired of the 'revolving door' experience of counselling with symptoms being temporarily relieved but continually recurring.

I work online or in person. Together we will make sense of your current situation and challenges, and identify the ways in which our work together would best serve you. Most of us were not shown how to understand and interact with our emotions and feelings so when faced with complex situations or unfamiliar feelings, it can feel too much to bear alone. As a Psychotherapist in Advanced Training I offer a safe space and empathetic attitude to support you through the challenges you are facing. Through increased clarity and self awareness you may develop new skills and ways of being in the world which are more satisfying and nourishing.

Life is difficult, confusing and scary sometimes, we can feel misunderstood and overwhelmed by issues that seem to multiply by the day. Perhaps you have a vision of where you want to go but no way to get there, perhaps even planning what you want for dinner is a struggle. You may be anxious, depressed, lost, grieving, searching for direction or struggling to cope with it all. I understand. Speaking about emotional pain can feel risky. Discovering the honesty and courage to put your experience into words can contribute to developing insight, self-confidence and self-respect.

I work with individuals to help them understand more of their conscious experience and I specialise in work with identity, rural isolation and sports performance. Working from a Psychodynamic perspective, I look to childhood and environmental experiences that may have a profound influence on the current conscious state. Our work together will be at depth, spanning at least 8 weeks and establishing a relationship necessary to explore the underlying elements that may be present.

I work with families, couples and individuals. Specialising in relationships, anger, self-esteem issues, addictions and emotional difficulties, I help you have a better relationship with others as well as yourself. I work with you to explore and understand your struggles, repeating patterns and find ways to change them or adapt them to make them helpful. Couples tend to argue in a cyclic nature without ever resolving their arguments. I work with couples to understand this cycle and how to exit it. Individuals can also get stuck in repeating patterns. Examining them, understanding them and working through them brings change.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
