I provide a kind and confidential space to help you cope with your distress and pain .
I am a qualified therapeutic counsellor supporting people who are anxious or grieving, frightened, lonely, struggling with sadness or in distress. I offer a warm and genuine welcome, an open heart and mind and time & space to be with you, to be alongside you for as much time as you need. After working as a paramedic for over 10 years I decided I wanted to retrain as a counsellor. I have continued to work for the NHS and find that people can be surprisingly resilient with the right emotional support.

I am a qualified and BABCP accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, experienced in treating anxiety, depression and PTSD. If you want to find ways to think and do things differently to feel better, then CBT could be right for you. Together, in a safe and structured way, we will make sense of what may be keeping you stuck and empower you to learn strategies to work towards your own goals. This could involve learning new coping techniques, challenging negative thoughts and beliefs, or experimenting with different ways of doing things. By the end of therapy you should have new tools to be able to live your life differently.

Our counselling offers help in addressing the difficult areas of your life. This might involve loss and grief, relationship troubles or problems at work. Equally, there are times when the cause is not clear but you still feel something is wrong. Colleagues, family and friends can be a great source of support but it's not always easy to confide in those closest to you. At times like these, talking to someone who is not personally involved can make a difference. A professional counsellor will listen to you without making judgments and can help you find new resources within yourself.

Life is messy and throws us off course. We experience pain , stress and anxiety for many reasons - life events, work issues, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, or feelings of low self-esteem that makes you feel stuck. We may simply feel adrift, struggling to find meaning and our place in the world. Confronting and solving problems can be a painful process which many of us avoid. Avoidance can result in greater pain and the inability to flourish both mentally and spiritually, but by working together to fully understand your issues and goals we can work towards a more fulfilled life.

Welcome. I meet each individual as they are, I don’t find labels helpful. Each individual has a healthy, creative part, the part that is seeking healing. With gentle curiosity we learn to trust this part of you, it leads our process, and over time, as we work together, new possibilities are found. If you are struggling with feelings of meaninglessness, stuckness, being lost, angry, depressed, disconnected; or are having difficult memories, maybe traumatic; difficulties with physical pain recovery or prescription drug addiction, I am happy to meet with you and talk about how we can work together. It is even more so, when struggling daily with indecision, fear, pain or lack of motivation.
I have been lucky enough in my career to date to work with some incredibly inspiring and brave individuals who have been at a crossroads in their life. Sometimes making change felt frightening or impossible due to past beliefs, stuck patterns of behaviour or limiting thought processes. Others were struggling to move on after devastation, illness , loss or identity crisis. I believe it is a privilege to be able to guide those in need at these times due to the courage and vulnerability they show. They are asking from the heart for a new beginning - to break from the past, not feel scared by the future and live truly in the present.

I also offer one to one Family Constellations work and Homeopathic consultations - I usually combine all my approaches in a series of 6 sessions which most clients find gives great insights and freedom from emotional trauma and physical pain .
Do you have problems with anxiety, depression or post traumatic stress symptoms? I practice Body Psychotherapy, a way of working with the body and mind which can release trauma symptoms held in the body. Often what is needed is to actually inhabit our body more and to let go of the mind and fears of the future or memories of the past. When we can more easily inhabit the present moment we can be in our body in harmony and ease. Please contact me if you resonate with any of this and also find more details on my website www.suehealerbath.co.uk I offer in person sessions and also distant sessions which can work just as well

This may include CBT for depression, anxiety, panic, stress, low self esteem, anger, OCD, trauma, PTSD, workplace conflict, addictions and chronic pain .
Choosing a professional to help you with your struggles can be a stressful process. Many people have heard of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy but aren’t sure what it involves, and don’t know whether they need CBT, counselling or something else. That’s not a problem - I will provide an initial phone or video consultation to answer questions, listen to your concerns and discuss with you what you are looking for. My first session involves an assessment of your current difficulties from the perspective of a trained mental health professional, and working with you to establish whether CBT or counselling would be most beneficial for you.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
