Hi, I’m Rebecca, a HCPC-registered Art Psychotherapist working with adults, adolescents and children.
You don’t need to be “good at art” to benefit from Art Therapy. The creative process can offer a powerful way to express thoughts, feelings and experiences that may be difficult to put into words.

I work using a combination of Humanistic and Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) approaches. I believe that this offers you the best of both worlds. You may feel your life has lost meaning and this can lead to depression, stress or anxiety. This can sometimes be due to unhelpful or negative thinking (cognitive) patterns and together we can work on these. Talking to a professional counsellor can help you process those feelings and move towards a more contented life. I will not judge you and I will always work at your pace. I offer a careful balance of support and gentle challenge.

As a psycho-dynamic practitioner, I see my role first as to provide you with a safe and confidential space in which explore whatever issues you may be experiencing. At unpacking what seem to be the problem, I would listen up to the symptoms but my interest would be on the collaborative understanding of the underlying cause. Exploring and understanding this, would be the body of the work. And it is that, what brings change, and a change that is lasting because will be located not in the symptom but on what caused it in the first place.

You might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck or not yourself. Many people come to me after cancer treatment, during surgical or chemical menopause, or when burnout has left them running on empty.
Some come as couples, trying to stay connected when illness, stress or big changes have shaken things. Others are neurodivergent or exploring whether they might be, feeling stretched thin or misunderstood.
If parts of this echo your own experience, we can look at it together in a way that feels manageable and begin to understand what’s been happening and what might help.

I am a HCPC registered art psychotherapist, full member of the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT)
I am interested in the idea that past experiences shape and influence the way we think and act in day to day situations. Within the safe space of the therapeutic relationship, I use an integrative approach to discover, explore and reflect on the creative adjustments developed in childhood. In that way, new creative adjustments can be formulated.

How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.
Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.
How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.
What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
