I have a lot of respect for anyone who chooses to begin counselling. It takes courage to be open with someone, and I don't take that for granted. As an Integrative counsellor, I have a range of therapeutic tools to help towards a breakthrough, particularly for clients who live with anxiety, depression , or present difficulties relating to past traumas. As human beings, we are wired for survival, and continually adjust to protect ourselves from threats and challenges. As our circumstances change through life, we may notice that the patterns which once kept us safe are now holding us back.

I have lots of experience working with relationship issues, anxiety, depression , stress, trauma, abuse and work related problems. During our first meet we will discuss and agree how we can best work together, the frequency and duration of the therapy and desired outcome, whether that's just wanting to feel better in some way, or something more targeted. This will then form a kind of contract which we will base the work on whilst reviewing it periodically. Usually sessions will be held on a weekly basis during the same time slot each week. I integrate a range of different psychotherapeutic approaches subject to your needs.

I work with adults and young people and offer both short and long term therapy. Sometimes life’s challenges may feel overwhelming, emotionally exhausting or relentless and we may seek professional support to help us find our way through. Anxiety, depression , feeling lost, lonely, confused or traumatised are just some of the many issues people bring. Whilst our personal stories and the reasons for our distress are ultimately as unique as we are, I have found that clients of all ages share a common goal; the desire to gain new perspectives and deeper understandings of themselves and to explore the possibilities and means of change.

In my experience we may all at times face hurdles too daunting to negotiate alone. I work with a wide range of issues focussing on clients who have suffered sexual abuse, as well as young people and adults experiencing stress, anxiety, trauma, panic attacks, depression and low self esteem. We may have issues and patterns of behaviour from the past that we are ready to leave behind. I offer a safe, confidential therapeutic space to be heard and feel safe. In some cases I work in the here and now, in others I believe in order to understand and find our inner resources to change present behaviour we need to delve into our past.

If you have experienced something very upsetting or traumatic, your mind/body might still be reeling in the aftermath. Your wonderfully clever autonomic nervous system works hard to keep you safe: to fight, or to flee, or to numb everything out, before your conscious brain has even noticed what’s happening. These unconscious responses may not always serve you, however. When traumatic charge is held in our bodies long after the threat has passed, we can experience all sorts of debilitating symptoms, from anxiety, to depression , insomnia, self-hatred, comfort eating, self-harming, or relating to others in ways that we later regret.

Feelings of being misunderstood, resulting in isolation, low self-esteem, depression , anxiety? Do you excel in creative-arts/engineering/sport, yet underachieve in other subjects? It could be that your learning style is at odds with mainstream education. Trying to fit into a society that favours viewing the world through an analytical lens where hard facts, certainty, and passing exams are the primary goal, can severely disadvantage creative thinkers. Creative people are often highly intelligent and talented yet find it hard for their voice to be heard, finding themselves falling by the wayside. I'd love to hear from you...

Depression Counsellors
Depressive disorders are characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness and a lack of desire to engage in formerly pleasurable activities. Depression is not a passing blue mood, which almost everyone experiences from time to time, but a complex mind/body illness that interferes with everyday functioning. It not only darkens one's outlook, it is commonly marked by sleep problems and changes in energy levels and appetite. It alters the structure and function of nerve cells so that it disrupts the way the brain processes information and interprets experience.

Despite feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, depression is a treatable condition. It can be treated with psychotherapy. As with many illnesses, the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it can be and the greater the likelihood that recurrence can be prevented.

Psychotherapy addresses the thinking patterns that precipitate depression, and studies show that it prevents recurrence. Drug therapy is often helpful in relieving symptoms, such as severe anxiety, so that people can engage in meaningful psychotherapy.
