I offer a thoughtful creative space for you to step back, explore and make sense of your situation. I have a special interest in autism and Asperger's syndrome from both a personal and professional perspective. People have come to see me to explore issues such as low mood, troubling family roles, unhelpful patterns in romantic relationships, neurodivergence and lack of meaning in life. Whatever you wish to attend to, we do so at your pace and rhythm.

You may be struggling with anxiety, stress, or anger. You may be feeling numb, low, or lost. You might be having difficulties in your relationship, at work, after a bereavement or in other aspects of your life. You could also be noticing a pattern which keeps repeating that you want to change. As you are unique, I believe your counselling should be too, and I will tailor my approach to you. That might mean that our sessions are a space for you to talk through your thoughts about your issues or work through your feelings at a pace that suits you.

My area of special interest is anger and rage work, and I offer specialised counselling for men.
Hi there, my name's Odin. The idea of counselling can be pretty unsettling. But you've probably done the hardest part already - you're here and you've accepted the possibility you might need some help with whatever's going on for you. That's already a really big and brave step. If you decide you might like to work with me, then we can safely and confidentially, with respect, compassion, empathy and gentle honesty, have a look at whatever's concerning you. Whatever it is, however hard it feels, I'm here if you want to look at it together.

Hello, I’m Ben, a psychotherapist based in York, and I support people to resolve life and relationship difficulties. If you’ve ever felt trapped, possibly disliking who you have become and feeling others blaming you too; we can work together to make sense of how you came to be the person that you are today, and how to make positive changes in your life- to make you more you. Often we feel life’s pressures, or that there is some is just ‘wrong’ but we are unsure of what ‘it’ is, we can resolve the it - to make you more you. I support clients with childhood trauma, complex diagnosis, as well as seemly day to day issues.

My approach to counselling is that we are all unique individuals, we may experience similar issues but how they affect us is totally different. I work with the person in front of me and help them accept, process and find their solution. Being genuine with my clients at all times and always remaining non judgmental. Each client will receive unconditional positive regard as we explore past events and find ways of moving forward and becoming the best versions of ourselves. Through active listening I will be empathic so I can understand how these feelings affect your quality of life.

There is hope for Angry Men! “The little things irritate me into arguing! I want to stop…” MEN and ANGER: A misconception – “I am just a fiery person, I can’t change that”. Not true! Are you getting irritable and angry at even the littlest of things? Do you drink to try and shift away from those feelings? Is it impacting your relationships? Are you arguing more than you really want? The longer this goes on the more likely it is your relationship will irreversibly break down. You don’t want to end up with heartbreak, loneliness or a broken home, only seeing your family at the weekend?

Beginning therapy can feel daunting. My job is to bring you space and deep listening; hearing what you need and responding compassionately and holistically to whatever emerges. In exploring what gets in the way of your connection with yourself and your relationships with others, unprocessed “knots” of pain come into awareness, revealed in our thinking, our feeling and how we walk, talk and interact. By enquiring what it’s like “to be you”, together we can explore how your gifts and difficulties tell a story about your past, your present, and how your unknown or unloved parts can be welcomed and shape a new path.

For young people, navigating the world they live in is difficult and for some, they require additional opportunities for emotional support beyond parents, carers and teachers. There are numerous reasons why a young person may want to access talking therapies. I am experienced in understanding those complex experiences and exploring fun and creative ways to help young people to also undertsand the impact of those complex experiences.

I am a trauma-informed, integrative therapist with NHS experience. Being trauma-informed means that I use a specific approach to therapy that recognizes and emphasizes understanding how the traumatic experience impacts a person’s mental well-being. This type of therapy is rooted in understanding the connection between the trauma experience and the person’s emotional and behavioural responses. Being integrative means that I can work at your pace with a wide variety of skills tailored to suit you. I am aware that therapy is not a “one size fits all” and I pride myself in working with you to reconnect you with your values in life

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
