Years of relational pain and trauma can accumulate in our bodies and minds leaving us with permanent feelings of anxiety, tension, depression and chronic pain or lead us to conclude that there’s no hope for finding what we need to thrive.
These symptoms tell a story about how hard you have had to work to keep safe in the world. In the therapeutic relationship, I can support you to listen deeply to parts of yourself that hold these old stories and in our bearing witness with care and compassion, create space for new ones to emerge.

People often first come for counselling when they begin to experience symptoms of low mood and anxiety such as disturbed sleep, low levels of motivation and energy, or increased rates of irritability and tension which just don’t seem to shift. These symptoms could be related to a significantly upsetting event, or they might be linked to a background of adversities and difficulties. Either way, you might be hoping to improve your mood and to reduce feelings of anxiety or panic, to regain a sense of confidence and self esteem, and to feel more energised and motivated. People often say they want to get back to their old self again.

There is no one way of living, and we will all find ourselves faced with challenges along the way. Sometimes, the help of an outside source can enable us to view things in a different light or explore in more depth, which is where counselling can be beneficial. I am a Person-centred counsellor working in an integrative way, as I believe no two people are ever the same, so how can a counselling approach be? For that reason, my approach may differ depending on who I am working with and their individual needs. I love meeting people from all walks of life, and it is a true privilege to play a small role in their journey through life.

I have particular expertise in working with people who have experienced trauma or adversity, which can lead to emotional difficulties and challenges in relationships. Hello! I am a BABCP accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) and EMDR Therapist, based in West Yorkshire. I have a keen interest in physical health and ADHD. CBT helps us understand the connection between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and how this can lead to challenges, even when we try our best. The goal of CBT is to work together to develop the skills and techniques necessary for you to become your own therapist and break free from unhelpful patterns. I utilize evidence-based techniques to help you work towards the goals that truly matter to you.

Maybe you’re processing a late autism or ADHD diagnosis, living with chronic illness, or carrying the weight of burnout and trauma.
My approach is calm, trauma-informed, and adaptable: online and indoors. I also offer talking therapy outdoor / eco-therapy, where the natural environment becomes part of the healing process. Together we can explore identity, process overwhelm and find gentler ways of being that fit who you are, not who others expect you to be.

With my brother diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia nearly 30 years ago, I have personal experience of the family sacrifices and struggles related to the pain and stigma of mental illness.
Personal therapy can be of help for a broad range of individual and/or social problems. Many people find it helpful when faced with difficult stages in their normal life cycle such as career changes, loss and bereavement or crisis points in relationships. Others look to therapy to help alleviate distress from the pressures of living everyday life situations.

Chronic Pain Counsellors
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
