Anxiety Counselling in Thames Ditton
I believe therapy offers a safe, warm, non-judgemental and confidential space where people can pause, reflect, and truly be heard. It is a place to explore what feels difficult, understand yourself more deeply, and begin creating the change you desire.
I know how hard it can be to sit opposite someone and talk about the things that feel overwhelming, painful, or confusing. It takes courage. For me it’s a true privilege to build a therapeutic relationship and connection, to genuinely walk alongside my clients on their unique journeys.
As Carl Rogers said, “Change begins by being fully heard and accepted.”

I’m a psychotherapist and recovery coach offering a calm, grounded space for people who feel stuck, bound, or unsure how to change. Often this shows up as a quiet sense that something isn’t right, sometimes as more urgent patterns that feel difficult to shift. My work is especially focused on addiction and recovery, alongside the deeper patterns that sit beneath them. I don’t offer quick fixes or directive solutions. Change, in my experience, happens more softly and at a pace that respects the person in front of me. The work is exploratory rather than prescriptive, and rarely linear.

Feeling anxious and overwhelmed with too much going on
What I offer is a space you can enter - pause - stop - and focus on yourself. I will not ever judge you or your ability to cope - I will genuinely try to support you and help you unpick your difficulties. That involves more than just passively listening and acknowledging. I will be active in the dialogue and bring my knowledge and experience "in the room".

I’ve worked in private practice, charities and the NHS with a range of individual issues, particularly depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and historical trauma; couples work includes relationship breakdown, affairs, communication and conflict challenges.
In session, I'll listen, ask questions, share thoughts and feelings and ensure our pace and direction feels right for you. I like to communicate plainly and clearly, (without ‘therapy speak’), and aim to bring compassion, creativity, acceptance and myself to our meeting, as a therapist and human being; I'm very much not a 'blank page'.

Maybe you’ve been carrying something for a long time, something you’ve never quite said out loud to anyone. It might be an exhausting pattern you keep returning to. A part of yourself that feels like too much, or not enough. Something about who you are, your sexuality, your identity, your history, that you’ve never fully brought into the light.
I work with people navigating addiction and recovery, including chemsex; childhood trauma and shame; and questions around sexuality and gender. These aren’t separate territories to me. I know how deeply they can overlap and how tiring it is to hold them alone.

The main issues I can help with are anxiety and depression, Initially, I give you a tool kit to help manage the symptoms, and then we try and find the belief system that is at the heart of the problem, which is generally outdated and causing you issues.
My approach is warm, gentle and understanding. I strive to create an inclusive environment that welcomes clients from all backgrounds, including LGBTQ+. Most importantly, I want to help make positive changes in your life, specialising in issues arising from childhood. We all experience ups and downs in our relationships. Still, if one or both people in the relationship are having mental health problems, this often brings extra challenges, and we may underestimate the impact this can have on the strongest of relationships, either at home or at work. I work with individuals and couples, helping with a full range of issues.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
