I am experienced working with evidence based treatments for anxiety, depression, generalised anxiety, shyness, phobia, health anxiety and OCD.
Hi I'm Matthew, a qualified CBT, integrative and psychodynamic psychotherapist. My style is warm and free of judgement. You may have problems you cannot explain to a friend or family member and need a third perspective. I work with anxiety and depression, relationships, loss, abuse, betrayal, self-esteem, anger, or those who are stuck. Improvement comes from insight, understanding and acceptance but also from stepwise, practical change. If requested I can work in a more active and future focused way with the current advice, exercises and activities supported by the evidence base.

We live in a busy world and may find ourselves expected to constantly juggle multiple priorities requiring limitless energy, or we may find ourselves feeling lonely amidst the busyness that surrounds us. We may be faced with work pressures, difficulties in relationships, anxiety or a sense of hopelessness. We may have an underlying dissatisfaction with our life, perhaps feeling we are living the life that others expected of us, not the one we might wish for ourselves. As we move through life we experience difficult times, perhaps trauma, loss, a transition, parenthood, work changes, relationship breakdowns and health issues.

“We often find that the harder we try to get rid of emotions and thoughts, the stronger they become.” Hi, I’m Lauren. As an experienced counsellor, I believe that people have a core self who is compassionate, curious, calm, creative, clear, courageous, confident and connected. However, through life experiences and challenges these core qualities can be squashed by parts of us whose main role is to help us to survive in the world. This is like the sun that is always constant but is sometimes covered by cloud. Therapy can be the wind that helps to move the cloud to allow the sun to cast its light on our lives.

Choosing a therapist can be daunting, especially when you may be anxious, at a low ebb & if you’ve had no experience of working with one before. My approach is to provide a warm, safe & confidential space for reflection; allowing you to explore your difficulties without judgement. This is an opportunity for you to explore yourself, what troubles you & how this may have been shaped by your past or current circumstances. Many of the things that keep us stuck are out of our awareness and so the aim will be to find a safe, measured way to explore this. The aim of therapy as Jung says: ‘Is not to fix our problems but to outgrow them'.

Welcome. You've taken the first step. I believe the genuinely supportive presence of another is invaluable; particularly one who is removed from our everyday life, and thus can listen with a completely open attitude. It feels particularly good to be received in this way; our guard can finally drop and in so doing we learn new things about ourselves. There's no deeper way to self-understanding than this. We change to the degree to which we can, unflinchingly, look at ourselves in this way. My aim is to facilitate this process by helping to provide such a space.

Whether you are an adolescent, adult, sports person or busy executive there are some common themes that resonate with my clients: Finding it hard to make decisions - fear of getting it wrong and constantly worrying/Being less tolerant, irritable over things that wouldn't normally bother you/Needing to do everything perfectly and setting high unrealistic expectations resulting in procrastination/Never feeling you have done enough/A very critical internal voice - Exhausting! Most of my clients want to quieten that negative voice and find ways to achieve and live life without the gnawing anxiety and self-doubt

Hello there. When we meet, I'll be interested in listening to your story and more importantly what brings you to therapy. Perhaps you are looking for some sort of peace within yourself or with your situation. Maybe you don't feel right and haven't done for a while but don't feel able to change. Sometimes life can be difficult to cope with. Therapy gives you the opportunity to slow down and reflect upon where you are at. It is a good way to check out how you really feel and the source of your discomfort. If you are looking for change then I will empathically support you through that process.

While there are many different approaches to psychotherapy and counselling, I work principally within the psychoanalytic tradition, a key part of which is to work in collaboration with clients to try to understand the unconscious origins of difficulties affecting our lives in the present. The aim is not to give advice, but to support people who have reached a point in their lives where they feel themselves to be facing difficult, sometimes confusing feelings and states of mind, to offer a reliable place to come and be listened to, without fear of being judged, criticised or told what to do.

Hello, my name is Dr Sonia Marquardt and I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist. I offer individual psychological therapy to young people and adults who are looking for a professional to explore their difficulties with. Mental health affects all of us at some point in our lives. The last two years have been particularly challenging. I now offer walk and talk therapy, which can be by the river or in Old Deer park.

Hello, I am Aldona. You are here so maybe it means you are thinking about counselling or psychotherapy. Investing in mental health is as important as physical. Anybody can benefit from therapy no matter what age or gender you are. It can be very rewarding because it helps you be the person you want to be. In these times of uncertainty, uneasy economic and political situation; isolation, bereavement and also historic emotional issues could be experienced more frequently and intensively. Difficulties experienced for a prolonged time can lead to somatic problems. “A good life is a process, not a state of being" (Carl Rogers)

I have worked for the past 7 years for a Children's Mental Health Charity with a particular experience in supporting parents with issues impacting on their parenting and family relationships including separation and divorce, bereavement, domestic abuse, anxiety and depression and low self-esteem. Parents who have engaged in counselling have reported an improvement in their confidence, self-esteem and emotional wellbeing which has impacted on their family relationships. During the Pandemic I have supported many clients through my private practise with issues related to home-working and subsequent anxiety and depression.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
