Grief
can be exhausting mentally and physically and it can be delayed, sudden or expected, you can experience the consequences of a
loss
even years after the passing.
I have a vast range of experience in working with clients with varying presenting issues. I am empathic and caring and will support you in your journey. I was drawn to counselling from my own life experiences. One of the most important things I feel I can offer to you as a client is empathy. Previously I have volunteered with a
grief
charity as part of my journey to being the fully qualified counsellor I am now. This journey has taken me 8 years of academic study and volunteering in a variety of counselling agencies. I feel I am still on my own personal journey, which will never end in terms of learning.

Firstly - well done for taking the first step. I can imagine deciding whether you want to have therapy or need therapy is a big question. Perhaps you have suffered a
loss
, a trauma or are going through a transition of some kind and you want the space and time to work through it. Perhaps this emotional distress is impacting on your relationships, work and your home life. I imagine you’ve tried many things and for some reason those old ways of coping that have done you well in the past just aren’t working anymore and you feel like you’re struggling. I provide evidence based psychological treatment that might help.

I have counselling experience in many fields, including
loss
&
bereavement
, self-worth, anxiety & depression, spiritual problems, work-related issues, relationships, life goals.
What do you need? It is sometimes helpful to ask yourself - "What are my main goals as I go for counselling? What is important to me right now? How would I like to change?" Often all someone needs is some quality time and space to be able to be themselves, and be heard - not feeling judged no matter what they say, and feel some compassion from somebody who cares. In the busy world in which we live, I provide that space for you to unwind, off-load and rediscover who you are, as well as deal with the problems you are experiencing - and change.

Perhaps you are experiencing stress, low-self esteem, the effects of trauma,
bereavement
or depression. Maybe you feel that something isn't quite 'right'. If so, psychotherapy could be used to help you gain self-acceptance, and a deeper understanding of what makes you 'tick' and what doesn't. Psychotherapy is typically a weekly meeting of fifty minutes, often over a medium to long term. With time and commitment, we aim to build what may be called a 'therapeutic alliance' that allows you to feel able to safely explore and eventually understand and come to terms with difficult thoughts, feelings and experiences both current and past.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
