Hi, I'm Stevie. I offer integrative, trauma-informed counselling that adapts to your individual needs. A lot of my work focuses on helping people heal from trauma, especially sexual abuse, and the many ways it can affect daily life, relationships, and self-worth by drawing from several approaches to create a safe, grounded space for reflection and growth. Together, we explore your experiences, build emotional resilience, and find ways to move forward with greater confidence, balance, and self-understanding.

Your pronouns will be adhered to, you are accepted just as you are whatever that might be, I proudly welcome you into a queer and trans friendly space, you are not alone
Is something in your life feeling stuck or anxiety ridden? Together we can look at what the stuckness is and untangle it. I facilitate support for you to talk about what's bothering you one step at a time. I offer a warm, accepting space where you can be yourself and explore what is going on for you at your own pace. My approach is relational, showing my humanness and not hiding behind a facade of theory. I listen not only to what is said, but also to the emotions and meaning behind it. I may gently reflect what I notice or ask questions to help you explore things differently, a bit like holding up a mirror to you.

Are you feeling trapped in patterns of behaviour that made sense in the past but hold you back now? Perhaps you're constantly reliving traumatic experiences in your mind or body, or feeling shame, self-criticism, anger or anxiety that you can't seem to change. Together we'll notice the feelings, beliefs, sensations and memories that show up for you in each moment, and find ways you can respond to these feelings that leave you feeling calm, self-compassionate and more resolved. If talking hasn't changed the difficulties you're experiencing, or your body feels stuck in past experiences, this way of working might be a good fit for you.

Are you struggling with feeling anxious, low or depressed, uncertain or disconnected? All around us people are feeling anxious, overwhelmed and uncertain about how they are supposed to manage their relationships, careers and their lives. You are not alone. Talking about it can really help but perhaps the people you usually talk to are struggling with their own problems or don’t know how to help. I’ve spent 30 years as a therapist listening and helping people find more peace, clarity and joy in life.

When working with couples or individuals, or ones exploring their sexual orientation and gender identity, my focus is squarely on helping you reach a place of self-acceptance and resilience. I’m Matt, I’m a qualified therapist and counsellor. I’m a real human and will bring my warmth, humour, care, honesty and acceptance to our sessions. I am specialised in the person-centred approach, which puts our relationship at the centre of therapy. We will work together to understand you, to help you process and to help you feel better within yourself. Who you choose as your therapist is a really personal choice. Probably the most important aspect of therapy is a good relationship between the therapist and the client. Really it’s about who you like, who you connect with and crucially who you feel that you can trust.

Feeling a bit lost and not sure how to move forward? You might be uncertain about who you are, questioning your direction, or navigating a period of change. Therapy can be a helpful way to explore and overcome whatever is causing you difficulties. I am a person-centred therapist, which means I trust that you are the expert in your own life and I work alongside you to create the meaningful change that you need. Rather than working on one “problem” in isolation, I work with the whole unique person, within a space where you are welcomed and understood.

The world feels really heavy right now. War, climate crisis, the rise of the far right, skyrocketing bills. And then there's your own personal struggles that you're trying to weather. If you're depressed, burnt out, or feeling overwhelmed, I offer a space to bring all of that - openly - without judgement. I am experienced in counselling LGBTQ+, neurodivergent (inc. autistic, BPD & ADHD) and chronically ill clients. I take a person-centred approach, not seeing you as broken or in need of fixing, but rather supporting you to make sense of what you're going through, and helping you figure out a way forward that really works for you.

I identify as transgender and would specifically encourage enquiries from the trans and non-binary community.
Existing in the modern world can be exhausting and overwhelming. Every day we face countless demands to be met, decisions to be made, and responsibilities to be upheld, and sometimes it can feel impossible to give yourself the attention that you need. Therapy is a space where, for just a short time, you can put all of those things aside and enable yourself to become the kind of person you have always wanted to be, and achieve the things you have always wanted to achieve. We will work together to piece together your story as you would want it to be told, to figure out who you are and how you came to be, and enact lasting change.

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognise a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognise a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
