Life has many challenges which can feel overwhelming. Ordinary life events such as a break-up or extraordinary life events such as traumatic incidents can have a huge impact on how we see ourselves, others, and the world. You might feel like your thoughts are a tangled mess or that you're stuck in a spiral which is pointed in the wrong direction. Maybe believing that you don't have the power to take control of your own life has left you feeling hopeless. At times like this, we are our own worst critic and can be very hard on ourselves.

If you're anxious or depressed, or feeling stressed because of particular issues in your life then its hard to choose a counsellor that might help you. I never knew whether to pick a therapist that looked as unhinged as I felt, or go for one that seemed to have life sorted! We often feel we have to pretend to seem 'normal' or put a mask on to face to world, but therapy can be the place where you can be yourself (or work out who that could be). I try to offer you space where you are safe to explore what is affecting you, and help you reach a way forward.

There are times in our life when pressures mount up so much, that they really impact on the quality of our day to day living and our overall wellbeing. This may be caused by specific events such as a relationship breakup, the death of a pet or loved one, redundancy or our health. It could be more general such as the impact of Covid-19, unfulfilling relationships whether that be with your colleagues, parents, siblings, partner or your children. Or, you’re not sure what’s causing you to feel so fed up – you ‘should’ be happy. Building resilience does not eradicate the stress and anxiety of everyday life, but it does reduce the impact.

Life is a journey and you hold the map, but at times it can lead you down a difficult road, with lots of bumps along the way. Life's journey isn't always smooth, we can get lost, take a wrong turning, reach a crossroads and be unable to decide which direction to take, or be unsure of our destination. Through talking and exploring your thoughts and feelings, counselling can help you to smooth these bumps and make your own decisions regarding which direction to take, to help you feel more in control of your own journey, and the destination that you would like to reach.

There can be many reasons as to why we may wish or not wish to work with a particular counsellor and so, before we commit to working together, I first offer a 15 minute free online consultation, which is an opportunity for us to meet virtually, for you to ask any questions that you may have and also for me to understand a little more about what is bringing you to counselling at this point in time.

Working with clients who feel confused, conflicted or unhappy about who they are, is an area of therapy I am drawn to. Whether as a result of birth; life choice; changes in circumstances or life stage; labelling or perceptions by others; or unresolved events from their past, this can feel an isolating, anxiety- inducing, unsettling and distressing time, it can also feel difficult to stop feeling negatively about yourself, feeling you're to blame. I get it, I really do. I can provide a non-judgemental space for you to explore your inner thoughts, worries, or beliefs that are making life difficult to cope with. A place you can be you.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
