Psychodynamic Counselling in Sutton Coldfield
The treatment is tailored to your needs and can include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic, and others depending on how best to help you.
Hi, I am Sam. I am a counsellor, a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, ex-educator, and good all round human. There has been a lot of life before counselling and lived experience of mental health, both my own and family members. I understand only too well the ripple effect that mental health has on relationships. There is a way forward, to heal and repair. Having someone that isn't emotionally involved in your daily affairs, that you feel you can trust and is really hearing you, can be the first step to a healthy and long recovery. Welcome, I look forward to meeting you.

What brings you to this search today? A current issue? At the surface maybe yes, but at a deeper level, maybe there's more. What might you be really seeking?
Often life seems to keep throwing us challenges, situations that we don't want or like. Situations that are painful and even shameful. We might look at this, 'zoomed in' and try to manage or firefight, which can work in the short term. But there is another way if we zoom out a little and hold both views. What is the lesson I need to learn from this situation? What work might I need to do on myself to finally move forward? What gift might this painful situation have to offer?

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially when you’ve spent a long time holding everything together on your own. You’ve done your best to manage, but it’s becoming harder to keep going.
You’re here because you want things to feel different: calmer, clearer, and more in your control. You don’t need to have all the answers before you start; you just need a safe, structured space to make sense of what’s happening and take steady steps forward.

I'm an integrative therapist, drawing primarily on Gestalt, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioural approaches.
Taking the first step into therapy can feel daunting, especially if you’re used to coping on your own. You might be functioning on the outside, but inside you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, or stuck in patterns that are getting you down. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone and you don’t have to carry it by yourself.
Many of the people I work with come to therapy feeling anxious, low, overwhelmed, or disconnected from themselves or others. You may have an idea of what feels wrong, but feel unsure how to move forward, or whether change is possible.

Counselling is an opportunity to talk over any troubling issues in a private and relaxed setting with someone who plays no other role in your life. It allows the counsellor and client to develop a non-judgemental, accepting relationship, where the client feels they are safe and able to express themselves freely. I am an experienced and integrative counsellor. I draw on various therapeutic theories and use them to best suit the unique needs of individuals. I am a registered member of the BACP and adhere to its ethical framework. Currently, I work for a charity offering support to young people and adults who are impacted by cancer.

Psychodynamic Counsellors
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
