At times life can be challenging and can sometimes feel overwhelming. Finding yourself looking at counsellors it seems you have already made the decision that things need to change. I understand how difficult this first step can be and the courage needed to take the plunge to make that call and ask for help. I can offer you a warm and caring space where you will be supported whilst you start to look at the issues that are troubling you and together we can unravel the emotions and confusion that is holding you back from living a happy and fulfilled life.

Taking the first step into therapy can feel daunting, especially if you’re used to coping on your own. You might be functioning on the outside, but inside you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, or stuck in patterns that are getting you down. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone and you don’t have to carry it by yourself. Many of the people I work with come to therapy feeling anxious, low, overwhelmed, or disconnected from themselves or others. You may have an idea of what feels wrong, but feel unsure how to move forward, or whether change is possible.

I have over 20 years’ experience working as a therapist with children, young people, and adults. During this time, I have worked across a range of settings, supporting individuals facing a variety of life challenges that have led them to seek therapeutic support. These challenges include adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), domestic violence, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and self-harm. In my work, I explore how past experiences and historical trauma may have shaped unhelpful behavioural patterns. By helping clients become more aware of these patterns, I support them in recognising, understanding, and working through them

What brings you to this search today? A current issue? At the surface maybe yes, but at a deeper level, maybe there's more. What might you be really seeking? Often life seems to keep throwing us challenges, situations that we don't want or like. Situations that are painful and even shameful. We might look at this, 'zoomed in' and try to manage or firefight, which can work in the short term. But there is another way if we zoom out a little and hold both views. What is the lesson I need to learn from this situation? What work might I need to do on myself to finally move forward? What gift might this painful situation have to offer?

My counselling approach combines aspects of Person Centred Therapy, Transactional Analysis and Psychodynamic Therapy. As a counsellor my job is to help you to both make sense of what is happening to you and to find a way to live with the challenges you are facing. I strongly believe that the best way to do this is to create a safe relationship where you don’t feel judged and can explore all of your feelings. You might be stuck in the same painful patterns in relationships, at work, or in your family, and wishing for change. Maybe you're constantly on edge, anxious, bracing for something to go wrong, followed by exhaustion or overwhelm. You've been pushing through, but now it just feels too much. You may find yourself people-pleasing, avoiding conflict, or feeling afraid to “rock the boat.” Maybe you’ve lost your voice, or never had space to develop one, pouring energy into meeting others’ needs or simply trying to get through the day.

People seek counselling and psychotherapy for various reasons. Not everyone knows what is bothering them. Often it is the difficulties and challenges of daily life that become overwhelming and unmanageable, impacting relationships, work and decision making. It is sometimes beyond the control of the individual to address those issues without professional help.

You may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or frustrated by patterns that keep repeating despite your best efforts to change. Perhaps anxiety, low mood, or the impact of past experiences is affecting how you feel about yourself, your relationships, or your parenting. Many people come to therapy wanting to make sense of what’s going on beneath the surface and to find ways of coping that actually help. Therapy can offer a space where you feel understood, not judged, and where change feels possible.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
