Therapy offers an important step in discovering the world around us and finding our place in it. For some people, coming to therapy is a big step. It can take courage to identify a need to heal, recover or progress. My approach aims to ensure that you feel safe in the knowledge that you can trust the therapeutic process. Maintaining the core values of empathy, unconditional positive regard for you as well as congruence (being authentic), I also use other modes of therapy.

For most of us, life is a complex mix of high and lows. Sometimes we need help from outside our family and friends to support mental health and wellbeing and help us find our way. If you or your family are struggling to navigate life, you have a child or young person in distress or you are experiencing difficulties with a new baby, psychodynamic psychotherapy can help make sense of thoughts, feelings and problematic behaviour, allowing a move towards better relationships, healthier behaviours, achieving potential and finding joy in life.

I am a 'Human Givens' Psychotherapist (www.hgi.org.uk). Whilst my HG journey started in 2009 my work in the field began 20 years prior. I have since taught on a counselling diploma, worked as a therapist with adults, staff within organisations, teachers, parents, young people and children overseas as well as in the UK (particularly Sri Lanka). In private practice my strengths lie in flexibility and creativity - tailor-making my approach to each client. I use an eclectic approach within the Human Givens framework, knowing exactly why each varied and different technique can be effective in accordance with current neuroscience.

Now more than ever we are living in a world where contact with others has become increasingly difficult, not just physically but also emotionally. It would be understandable for many people to be feeling isolated and cut of from the rest of humanity at this time, for some this may also trigger painful, old wounds of unmet needs and maybe even a sense of hopelessness. You may crave feeling really connected to someone who is fully present with you and is invested in really understanding you and your situation, someone who can help you to create a relationship that will help to heal relationships that have failed in the past.

The reasons for seeking therapy are many. I am a strong believer in our ability as individuals to change how we feel, think and react to the situations we find ourselves in and which may be causing us difficulty. I see my role as a therapist as a facilitator, allowing a client to learn about themselves, their relationships and their behaviours.

In troubling times it can sometimes feel like you are alone & seeking help might feel really difficult. Just having a space to make sense of the thoughts that jumble around our heads is invaluable. Perhaps you need to understand yourself, your relationships or events from your past. Sometimes all we need is someone to just listen and hear our story. Counselling promotes insight, fosters self-awareness & creates a stronger, more resilient sense of self. This powerful combination can be the kick-start for the changes in your life you wish to make - sometimes even the smallest changes can make a huge difference in your well-being.

Are you feeling stressed, anxious or on edge? Do you criticise yourself or feel like you don't have the motivation to do the things you usually enjoy? Then Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (or CBT for short) might be the type of therapy for you. When we're experiencing anxiety or low mood people often describe feeling stuck in a vicious cycle. Using CBT we work together to understand what your cycle looks like and how we can break that cycle and create healthier habits and patterns of thinking. I am also qualified in delivering the Flash technique (an offshoot of EMDR) to work on and process traumatic or distressing memories.

I work with a wide range of issues, including but not limited to anxiety, depression,
insomnia
, OCD, addictions, PTSD and phobias. I invite clients to shape and express their goals (these often change or are added to!) and we work together to reach them. Sometimes problems have gone on for years; sometimes they are new and acute. In both cases they can be resolved: people can move towards a life that is fulfilling, meaningful and happy.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
