You may have a child struggling with being at school, or perhaps you find yourself constantly at loggerheads with them. Perhaps they can't sleep, or don't want to get up in the morning, they might feel lonely, or misunderstood, criticised, or attacked . You may have tried every strategy you can find, to persuade your child to eat, or listen, or simply follow instructions. We all believe that childhood should be a time of simple happiness, but in fact this is a time of enormous developmental challenge, and many things can make it hard for children and adolescents to tread the path towards a resilient, positive, independent adulthood.

Most of our problems in life, in my opinion, stem from difficulties managing and understanding ourselves - how we got to where we find ourselves, why we struggle to cope, why we feel the way we do. Counselling offers an opportunity to learn how we tick and why, which is one way to ease some of the psychological and/or physical burdens we find ourselves carrying. Counselling is an investment in oneself, a start in unravelling the complexities of who we are.

I am a 'Human Givens' Psychotherapist (www.hgi.org.uk). Whilst my HG journey started in 2009 my work in the field began 20 years prior. I have since taught on a counselling diploma, worked as a therapist with adults, staff within organisations, teachers, parents, young people and children overseas as well as in the UK (particularly Sri Lanka). In private practice my strengths lie in flexibility and creativity - tailor-making my approach to each client. I use an eclectic approach within the Human Givens framework, knowing exactly why each varied and different technique can be effective in accordance with current neuroscience.

I work with parents and families as a Family Therapist (Systemic Psychotherapist). This is an evidence-based model which addresses issues that arise in relationships. It can be helpful to families of any description, whether this is blended families, sibling relationships or adult children and their parents. When an issue is addressed within the same context that it is experienced, there is a greater chance that issues can be better understood and managed and addressed.

For most people, caring for children and young people is a complex mix of high and lows. Sometimes we need help from outside the family to support mental health and wellbeing and help us find our way. If your family is struggling to navigate life, you have a child or young person in distress or you are experiencing difficulties with a new baby, psychotherapy can help make sense of thoughts, feelings and problematic behaviour, allowing a move towards better relationships, healthier behaviours and achieving potential.

I have worked in a variety of settings in the field of mental health services: HMP Prison services in specialist addictions units & rehabilitation, Community drug services NHS Primary Care with IAPT and the Priory Hospital Bristol with inpatients and outpatient services. Each of these positions has built skills of understanding, therapeutic alliance, compassion and commitment to each of the people that trust me to support them. I believe in the ‘art and science’ of CBT and the therapeutic value and benefit of those coming together. This requires effort and personal investment, and it can feel hard, so let’s take a breath together .

You might be in crisis: a relationship breakdown, sudden news of the death of a loved one or an illness, a work loss, or at an emotional or spiritual crossroads. Or you may generally have the feeling that your life isn't all you'd like it to be - you feel stuck, aren't living up to your potential or feeling as fulfilled or happy as you would like. Either way, you can be supported to navigate successfully through the very choppy waters of crisis - or the fog of confusion or uncertainty. You don't have to go it alone! You may well emerge from the other side a stronger and happier person than you ever thought possible.

Now more than ever we are living in a world where contact with others has become increasingly difficult, not just physically but also emotionally. It would be understandable for many people to be feeling isolated and cut of from the rest of humanity at this time, for some this may also trigger painful, old wounds of unmet needs and maybe even a sense of hopelessness. You may crave feeling really connected to someone who is fully present with you and is invested in really understanding you and your situation, someone who can help you to create a relationship that will help to heal relationships that have failed in the past.

Hi, and a warm welcome. I'm a qualified counsellor and have been for a number of years offering therapeutic support for adults, adolescents, children and families either together or individually, in my private practice and within primary and secondary schools. I can offer support too many for many reasons. I have two locations; Quedgeley and Stroud both a welcoming safe space. I always welcome a free initial email or chat or meet and briefly discuss ways of support that suits all. This can also give you all an opportunity to see the space, meet and talk with me with no obligation. This helps in deciding what is best for you.

Eating Disorders Counsellors

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviours, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behaviour affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counselling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioural disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behaviour, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognise they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behaviour has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
