I’m an Integrative Psychotherapist working online, across the UK, and in-person in Central Manchester. My specialisms are anxiety, self-esteem, low mood & relationships, in all their forms. Some of the issues I frequently support clients with include difficulties within relationships with partners, friends, family members; 'people-pleasing'; self-criticism; work-related stress & anxiety; feelings of loneliness / isolation; feeling stuck. These are all natural things to struggle with, but change is possible and therapy can help.

Many of my clients appear to be coping on the outside but feel anxious, low, or stuck underneath. They may struggle with overthinking, people-pleasing, self-doubt, or a harsh inner critic. Often these patterns developed in response to difficult or overwhelming experiences. I help them understand why they feel this way, make sense of their patterns, and begin to shift them so they can feel more confident, grounded, and in control.

My ideal clients are adults who may feel overwhelmed or stuck, or who struggle to make sense of their thoughts, emotions, or life experiences. Many come to therapy because they are experiencing anxiety, depression, low self esteem, relationship difficulties, trauma, grief, or the impact of significant life changes. I also have a particular interest in supporting people as they navigate the complexities of culture, faith, identity, and family expectations. These experiences can sometimes leave people feeling conflicted, isolated, or unsure of who they are or the direction they want their lives to take.

Hi, I’m Sofia. I understand how difficult and overwhelming taking that first step can feel — especially when you’ve been carrying so much on your own. Reaching out isn’t easy. My approach is centred on offering you a safe, supportive space to process the emotions you may have been holding for some time, and to gently explore the deeper feelings beneath them. Together, we can work towards helping you move through your challenges and carry yourself in a way that feels authentic and true to who you are.

Do you long to experience some peace, freedom and self trust around food? I believe this should be a birthright for everyone. If you are feeling out of control around food and concerned about the size or shape of your body, I get it because I've been there. I now use my professional and lived experience to help others find their way out of the prison of binge eating. I'm sure you have tried many times to gain control of your eating and maybe you're at a point where you're thinking there must be more going on than simply not being able to stick to a diet. Is therapy the answer?

Perhaps you feel something isn't quite right. Maybe you can't put your finger on it, or maybe you can? A relationship that's become difficult, a pattern you keep falling into, a sense of being stuck somewhere you don't want to be. You know something needs to change, but understanding what and doing it are different things. That's where I come in. I work with people who are ready to understand themselves better. To spot the patterns, make sense of where they are, and find a way forward. Not back to how things were, but somewhere new. Somewhere with more clarity, more choice, greater wellbeing.

I draw on a range of evidence-based approaches - including CBT-E, Compassion Focused Therapy, CBT-AR, and ACT for body image work - tailored to what's actually going on for you, not a one-size-fits-all programme.
I support people towards a life where food feels less loaded, and where their sense of worth isn’t tied to what they eat, or how their body looks. If you're here, it might be because food, eating, or how you feel in your body has started to feel harder than it used to. Maybe it's constant thoughts about food, weight, or appearance. Or it could be feeling stuck in cycles you can't break. Whatever form this takes, I work with it - from diagnosed conditions like anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and ARFID, to orthorexia, where a fixation on 'healthy' eating spirals into anxiety, rigid rules, and a reduced quality of life.

Are you tired of doubting yourself and feeling like you're never quite enough? Do you find yourself caught in a cycle of overthinking, overachieving, and constantly questioning your worth? If this sounds like you, I'm here to help. The people I work with are often driven to succeed but held back by an inner voice that doubts, criticises, or shames. Underneath their accomplishments, they feel exhausted by perfectionism, people-pleasing, or self-blame that keeps them stuck. Many suspect they are neurodivergent, or are starting to realise that growing up with emotionally immature parents has had a significant impact.

I believe that the therapeutic relationship is the most important aspect of therapy. To provide a space where you feel safe, respected and never judged. I am an trained in various therapies including cbt therapy. Sometimes life throws us a curve ball and getting up everyday and doing everyday things is a struggle sometimes we need someone to walk through the dark times with us and to remind us we are not alone and things can and will get better. I am also a qualified coach and work with women that have experienced abuse. Alongside my therapy practice, i am also a supervisor and have 22 years of experience supporting therapists.

Body Image Counsellors
How does body image affect mental health?
Poor body image can influence mental health because it can reduce self-esteem and decrease functioning in other areas of one's life. Negative body image may hinder someone's ability to perform daily tasks, including professional and social responsibilities, because they may feel self-conscious or shame surrounding their appearance; a desire to change one's body as a result of negative body image can also trigger behaviors such as extreme dieting, excessive exercise, or obsessive social media comparison. Poor body image is associated with a number of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and eating disorders, although many people experience negative body image even in the absence of meeting the diagnostic criteria for any mental health disorders.

What does it mean to have a positive body image?
Body image refers to how one internally perceives their appearance and internally "talks" to themself about their body. Positive body image is therefore indicative of a positive perception of one's self and positive internal self-talk that underscores one's strengths. People who have good body image often have higher self-esteem, self-worth, and self-confidence, and they also often recognise how external factors, such as social media or relationship patterns, can influence body image. While body image can change at different life stages and in response to various triggers, practicing self-acceptance and a body-positive mindset can help maintain a more stable sense of positive body image.

Is body image the same as self-esteem?
Body image and self-esteem are often related, but they are distinct concepts. Self-esteem is a broader term that can be shaped by a number of factors outside of body image, including one's functioning at school or in the workplace; it refers to one's capacity to handle various life challenges. Poor body image can be one way in which one's self-esteem is reduced. Reduced self-esteem as a result of poor body image can cause individuals to feel negative about their appearance, withdraw from social interactions, and/or rely on harmful behaviours as a coping mechanism. A "body positive" approach to body image therapy is therefore often used to encourage a more positive view of one's self and thus encourage better self-esteem.

What type of therapy is best to foster a positive body image?
The type of therapy best suited to improve body image depends on each person, as there is not a single therapy specific to body image improvement. That said, many individuals with poor body image benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based therapy. CBT can be used to help challenge distorted or negative thoughts about one's body, while ACT and mindfulness practices can facilitate a more positive body image through self-acceptance and identification of one's personal strengths. Regardless of treatment type, clients should look for body image therapists who encourage the development of a sense of self outside of their external appearance and help clients reduce unwanted behaviours developed as a result of poor self-esteem, such as dieting or disordered eating patterns.
