You may be feeling alone and lost or you don’t feel anything. You are on the outside looking in at life and just want to be part of it but something is missing. You know this and you want to fill the void and are desperate to feel normal.

Hi, my name is Rimpy Sandhu. I have been working as a volunteer as well as in my private practice as a counsellor and psychotherapist for 13 years . I know it can be very scary and difficult to talk about your issues, revisit those painful memories. Sometimes it’s hard to recognise and express your own feelings. I offer a professional, supportive, confidential, non judgmental and ethical therapy in order to help with your presenting issues. Counselling helps you to understand yourself and to find coping strategies to deal with the day to day difficulties you might be facing.

It can seem like the hardest thing to do to access counselling, but it can be life changing if you take that first step. You may not be entirely clear on what you want but just have a feeling that things don't feel right and you have decided that you want to understand what, why and how to refocus and live the life you feel is best for you. Or perhaps you are very aware of a struggle with difficulties, which may already be formally diagnosed by another professional, and you want to regain some control instead of feeling that these issues take over. I can support people in achieving their goals wherever they are in their journey.

I am currently counselling at Myton Hospice, Age UK taking GP referrals working with Loss, Bereavement, Stress, Anxiety, Addictions, PTSD, Trauma, Dementia, Neurological conditions.
Hello my name is Sonya, I am a CBT therapist (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy). Sometimes in life we all get to a point where we just need to reach out. I can offer you time to listen effectively in a comfortable, safe, and confidential environment. Working with CBT enables you to talk about your feelings and emotions in situations as they may affect our behaviours and by recognising this we can adapt some change. Being able to express your feelings or presenting issue may be difficult especially to loved ones, family and friends. Reach Out will empower you to contribute to your well-being, sense of belonging, and self worth in Therapy.

Everyone faces challenges, dilemmas, fears, problems and issues in their lives. Sometimes we can manage to cope. Sometimes our usual coping methods don't seem to work. We find ourselves struggling and we need someone to talk to, someone who will listen and to somewhere we can talk about our feelings and thoughts and to explore opportunities for change - to get our lives back on track again.

In these challenging times you may be experiencing anxiety, struggling to make sense of your world while coping with existing emotional issues. I understand how difficult this can be and offer a safe, confidential space where we can explore the issues or events that have led you to seek counselling. At various stages in our lives we can struggle to make sense of things, whether in our relationships, working lives, due to bereavement or any major life event. This can result in feelings of anxiety, low self esteem, depression and lack of motivation and energy. We may feel our relationships are in crisis and cannot see a way through.

I endeavour to provide a safe, comfortable, quiet space for clients to explore sensitive issues. The relationship between myself and the client is at the heart of my approach. I believe that being with a client and offering a compassionate holding presence while they share their story is essential to establish a therapeutic working alliance before offering insight and psycho education. I adapt my approach to suit the needs of each client and integrate suitable interventions or tools work with whatever issue the client is presenting.

In counselling we can work together to enable you to heal and become more accepting of yourself, be more connected to those around and live a fuller and deeper life. I work by providing a safe space to explore what has happened in your life, allowing these events to be processed. I bring my empathy and kindness to build a relationship where you feel safe to explore whatever needs to be considered allowing the healing process to begin. I might notice patterns or observe behaviours allowing a deeper journey into your unconscious.

Life has a way of taking us down some pretty rough roads at times, and it can make us feel alone, anxious, angry, confused, all sorts of emotions, that when left can build and bring us down even further. Sometimes we can feel overwhelmed and it can interfere with our enjoyment of life and keep us stuck. Breath, you are not alone. Sometimes you just need someone to hear you. I’m here to listen and assist you with the issues you are experiencing. I have a passion for helping people learn to cope with and overcome the issues that are hindering their lives. It can be daunting to reach out, but that is where I can help.

I like to help people to become unstuck, as that is often what brings people to therapy. With over 2500 hours of therapy, I have found that there is usually always another way to live. If you're feeling stuck, low, anxious, highly stressed, overwhelmed, angry, regretful, let's talk about these difficulties and work towards change in order for you to live a more free and enjoyable life. There is a protocol to guide us when needed, but really we'll work on what's most important to you in order for you to live a more meaningful and enjoyable life, and ultimately to be more of the person that you want to be.

Beginning counselling can feel like a big step. We all have 'mental (or emotional) health' needs and I believe that we all benefit from giving this our time and attention. I have over 20 years experience working within mental health, specifically in education settings and in recent years I have established my private practice. I work with adult clients and adolescents from aged 15.

Geriatric and Seniors Counsellors

Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?

Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, dementia, and physical mobility challenges.

How can geriatric therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?

Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

How is counselling for elderly different from counseling for other age groups?

Many aspects of geriatric counselling are similar to counselling in younger age groups; in general, counselling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. However, therapists who specialise in working with elderly clients may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counselling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

Can geriatric counselling help people who suffer from dementia?

Counselling can be highly effective for aging adults with dementia. While some therapists specialising in dementia may work with clients solely on topics surrounding memory loss, they can also assist clients with conditions that may co-occur at old age, such as anxiety or depression. Counsellors specialising in working with older adults can also offer an objective assessment of a client’s functioning or disease progression to caregivers, and they may be particularly knowledgeable about community resources that may benefit dementia clients and their families. Therapists specialising in dementia may also be trained in specialised forms of therapy for memory loss, such as Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST)—which can help mentally stimulate dementia clients to preserve cognitive functioning.
