I truly believe in the life-changing benefits of counselling and would encourage everyone to try it. We all need a space where we can process our feelings and thoughts clearly. Have you faced a lifetime of not feeling good enough, and would love to experience a better view of yourself? Facing a relationship breakdown? Suffering from high levels of anxiety? Maybe there is a big change in your life or a painful loss. Have you been trying to bury feelings of shame or hurt from something that happened years ago? Have you experienced a traumatic event or abuse and you just can't get rid of the impact of it, no matter how hard you try?

Life is so beautiful, and life is so hard. Maybe, for you, it feels especially hard right now. On the outside, you might appear fine, but inside, you’re overwhelmed. Anxiety, overthinking, or self-doubt could be holding you back, making it hard to focus or set goals. Sleep may feel impossible, leaving you exhausted and unmotivated. You want clarity, calm, and to reconnect with what matters most. You’re ready for change, even if you’re unsure where to start.

I work with adults who are overwhelmed by life, constantly putting everyone else first, and feeling like their own needs are selfish. It can feel like an act of rebellion to look after yourself in a world that often pushes self-sacrifice, productivity, or resilience at any cost. You want to go out and connect with others, yet you often find yourself avoiding people or staying in. You spiral beforehand, and when you do manage to step out, other thoughts take over, worrying about panic attacks, feeling drained and ashamed afterwards, and replaying everything you said. You are braced for impact, but you don’t know why.

Hi, how are you? Are you feeling stressed, perhaps a little depressed/low mood, or suffering with low self esteem, fear or issues such as anxiety ( including generalised anxiety disorder) anger? Panic attacks, self-harming, it might be that life has been just difficult to manage: relationships, childhood trauma, bereavement. If any of this sounds familiar, I might be able to help.

While we all deserve to have a life that we feel secure in and a future that we can look forward to, in reality there are times when this simply isn't the case. It might be that we look for help with overwhelming feelings of anxiety and depression, or a little nagging voice at the back of the mind that says that now is the right time to talk to someone.  Or perhaps something quite clear and traumatic has happened. Working together, therapy can become a way of finding the words to make sense of confusing experiences.

I work with Depression and Anxiety. Commonly other issues are intertwined such as trauma, attachment issues and low self-esteem. Clients that begin to work with me often do so because they find that their feelings, thoughts or other symptoms have begun to affect areas of functioning in life; they find that coping mechanisms that have been helpful in the past are beginning to work less effectively. My attachment-based approach means that I am interested in your past - our early relationships determine how we connect with others as adults, how we view ourselves, and how we regulate ourselves.

Hi there, my name is Ellie and I am a Counsellor specializing in trauma and the common coping skills that develop from it's effects. These include the areas of disordered eating, body image issues (including body dysmorphia), addiction (self-medicating to avoid the effects of trauma), being drawn to abusive relationships and patterns of becoming stuck and paralyzed in these damaging dynamics. The heart of my therapeutic work is to help clients discover their authentic self and to gently dis-engage from painful old beliefs they may have internalized from complex and overwhelming environments.

Welcome and thank you for visiting my profile. I have been a qualified psychotherapist for 25 years and yet still do not have any magic solutions. I have learned that the most important relationship we have is the one with ourselves and sometimes that is also the most difficult. My role is to respect your individuality and endeavour to help you make the changes that you are seeking. I have a wide range of experience including short term work, which means that I can be quite direct at times. I'll say it as it is though am not here to tell you what to do - you're an adult and can make your own decisions.

I have BA (Hons) in Person-centred counselling, which has helped in my understanding of various issues we face in our daily lives, garnered during my training and working with various clients, and offering pastoral care to members of my local community. These issues may include but not limited to depression, anxiety, bereavement, stress, trauma, divorce, etc. I will work in an empathetic, non-directive and non-judgemental way to ensure you get what you need from counselling by openly discussing and making shared decisions with you, with the belief that different clients need different things at different times

Life can feel overwhelming at times, and navigating its ups and downs isn’t always easy. You might be struggling with your mental health, facing challenges from the past or present, or just sensing that something feels "off" but not knowing why. Hi, I’m Rachel. With over 18 years experience as a counsellor and 15 years working in mental health, I truly understand both the challenges and the transformative power of therapy—because I’ve been on both sides, as a client and a therapist. You don’t have to figure things out alone. If you're ready to take that first step, let’s do it together.

I am an integrative counsellor with a passion for helping my clients grow in understanding of themselves and others, working together with them to bring about healing and change. I place my clients at the centre of their therapy, giving them autonomy and choice. I see my role as journeying with my clients as they bring the issues that are troubling them. We will work together to find answers. I seek to use different counselling approaches, like tools in a toolkit, that best fit with each client. I believe that the relationship between counsellor and client is the fundamental ingredient for change and growth to take place.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
