I appreciate how difficult it is when you just don't feel ok, sometimes you know what is causing the problem other times you don't. At times in our lives we encounter emotions that become overwhelming causing anxiety , sadness or anger wether its work, health, marriage, children, parents, or bereavement - you don’t have to suffer this alone. Wether you are male, female young or mature there are issues that arise that are not easy to cope with but this is when I can help you most by unravelling the confusion. I understand its really difficult to seek help but its ok to not be ok, and there is always someone to turn too.

Hello there, I qualified to practice back in 2002, from here I worked full time as a Counsellor for an Alcohol service. I worked for ten years with clients where the presenting issue was alcohol misuse, however there were many other issues our clients struggled with, such as Depression, Anxiety , Low Self Esteem etc. I have extensive experience of successfully working with clients to make significant changes and to reach their goals. Since leaving this service, I have worked in a variety of therapeutic settings, gaining more and varied experience. I can help with most issues and usually without a need for long term therapy.

‘We don’t have to do all of it alone, we were never meant to’ Brene Brown This quote resonates with me and acknowledges that we all have times in our life when we all need support and that we do not need to go through difficult and distressing times alone.

We work with: relationship difficulties, depression, stress, anxiety , bullying, low self-esteem, bereavement and loss and many more.
There maybe times in our life where we need a safe, supportive environment so that we can explore our troubles and feelings without fear of judgement. Having a listening ear and being truly heard can really help us to get a better understanding of these troubles and aid us to develop ways to move forward in our lives. Sometimes having a confidential space to do this with someone who is independent of the situation is all that's needed. It takes courage to talk to a Counsellor but the rewards are usually worth it. To contact us please visit our webpage www.affordablecounsellingservice.co.uk or call us on the number above.

You may be experiencing a concern in your life for which you would like support. In therapy we look together at how well your needs are being met and the impact of this on your emotional wellbeing. Using the Human Givens framework (https://www.hgi.org.uk/) we also look at how you can use your innate resources more productively to meet these needs. Within this my approach is empathic, fluid and flexible, drawing on a range of approaches to suit you as the client. It is effective for anxiety , depression and addiction, often in a few sessions. For trauma a safe, non-intrusive and highly effective approach is available.

With a thorough training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, I help individuals who wish to work through current or historical problems - yes, CBT can look at the past as well as the present! Having been diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, I can empathically assist those with the condition as well as mental health difficulties including anxiety and depression.
In my therapeutic work I encourage the use of self-compassion and mindfulness from the outset. With over 4 decades experience of ADHD, I focus on this as a specialism (particularly in adults, but also with young people). Each individual journey is unique; it is thus vital that clients - with support - take responsibility for their own growth. Essentially, I aim to act as armbands for the swimmer; utilising Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in a collaborative process of goal-realisation and personal development. If you are committed to moving forwards; and deepening self-understanding; then contact me to discuss requirements.

Anxiety Counsellors

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
