My approach comprises of Humanistic, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy.
I have extensive experience of supporting people through a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties and believe in the importance of building genuine and transparent relationships, working at relational depth to help facilitate change. The issues I work with are many and varied and clients goals are fundamentally 'to feel better' and live a more enriched and fuller life. How this is achieved and the therapeutic strategies employed will be unique and individual to every client.

I specialise in offering Clinical Psychology services to children, teens and families. Are you a concerned parent? Do you recognise any of these challenges in your child? Persistent worry and preoccupation, a noticeable shift from their usual joyful self, a reluctance to engage in activities they once enjoyed, frequent excuses overshadowing enthusiasm, puzzling changes in their behaviour, heightened sensitivity and emotional reactions. If you're struggling to find effective ways to help, if your well-intentioned efforts, such as talking to them, providing reassurance or encouragement, seem to lead to dead ends, I'm here to assist.

I use traditional forms of CBT, alongside approaches such as mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy and life coaching skills.
If anxiety and depression are getting in the way of you living your life the way you want to, we can work together to change that. We can often feel low when life isn’t going as planned or anxious and overwhelmed when we are struggling to cope. This is why I created ‘The Calm Clinic with Libby Thompson’, to provide people with a safe, comfortable space to be open about their stresses and worries, feel heard and validated whilst discussing strategies and techniques that may be helpful. Therapy is a partnership, a joint journey, and my aim is to provide you with the individual support you need to make positive changes.

I also approach things with a mindfulness slant, and use elements from my training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, and Coherent Breathing.
Peace of mind and contentment are possible, no matter what circumstances life has thrown at you. It is not always about changing what is happening - that can often be beyond our control. But it is possible to change our relationship with the events and people in our lives.

I work with couples and individuals using evidence-based methods — EMDR, CBT, and ACT — to help you break unhelpful patterns, reduce distress, repair trust, and live more in line with what matters to you.
You might be a couple stuck in conflict, distance, or betrayal — or an individual trying to make sense of a painful relationship, loss, or past experience that keeps replaying, or struggling with anxiety, mood, or psychological and emotional difficulties. Either way, you’ve reached the point where coping alone isn’t enough. You want clarity, change, and a way forward that feels honest and workable, and actionable — not just more “coping.” You’re looking for therapy that’s practical, and genuinely helps you understand what’s going wrong and what to do about it.

People who are finding every day a real struggle with strong, even overwhelming feelings of depression, anxiety, stress, anger. At the other end of the spectrum are some who may have feelings of dissatisfaction a sense that they are not getting all they want in their lives. I believe that all of us want to strive to be happier and more fulfilled than we currently are. We want to feel a connection with other people and to have a sense of well being and connection with the world around us.

I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ( ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and EMDR.
I will tailor our sessions based on your individual needs and preferences. I understand how hard it can be to take that first step in reaching out for support, and how important it is to find a therapist who feels like the right fit for you. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or would like to arrange an initial appointment.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
