I have over 15 years experience working as a counsellor and have experience of working with clients with eating disorders, couples/relationships,OCD, anxiety, grief, abuse, loss, post-traumatic stress , trauma, depression, stress, addictions, gambling, aspergers, sexuality, self-esteem, sexual identity, parenting issues, self-harm, anger issues, co-dependency.
We all have times when we find it hard to cope. Counselling can help you understand why you think, feel and act like you do. It can help you develop positive strategies to get what you want out of life. How we think, feel and behave is part of being human. Problems can arise when we get 'stuck' in negative thought patterns; when our feelings are persistently overwhelming; when our behaviour is self-destructive and doesn't result in us getting what we need; when we worry about the future, dwell on the past and find it hard to live in the present. I believe the most important relationship we have is the relationship with ourself.

I believe that relationships are really important. We encounter lots of different relationships over the course of our lives: friends, siblings, parents, bosses, co-workers…and then there’s the relationship we have with ourselves. Our unique life experiences inform our thoughts, feelings and behaviours; and sometimes we can get stuck in outdated patterns. Common mental health conditions such as: depression, anxiety, OCD, phobias, and addiction, are often symptoms of the effects of adverse life experiences. Treating the underlying causes of whichever symptoms are affecting you can dramatically reduce their impact.

Isn’t it strange how we talk the least about the things we think about the most?! Talking about your feelings, your emotions, your behaviours and your thoughts can feel overwhelming and conflicted, not knowing where to begin, this can seem scary and uncomfortable. My role is to support you to acknowledge, explore, accept, and understand them in order to achieve growth & positive change. My philosophy is that you hold your own answers internally but you are unable to access them, working collaboratively we will unlock them using your strengths and gaining empowerment.

We all experience losses in life – not just when someone dies but when we lose anything that is important to us: our relationships, our dreams of having a family, our health, our home, our job, our independence, our pets, and our hopes or expectations. Often, we are able to grieve for those losses and adjust but sometimes we are left feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, angry, guilty, ashamed, withdrawn, or numb for many months or even years later. Adjusting to losses in life is not about ‘getting over’ them but about finding ways to live a life that includes them.

Have you been feeling a bit low lately? Maybe even anxious at times; trapped or isolated, or just stuck. Do you often find yourself repeating the same patterns? If you are sat reading this, nodding, relating to any of this then counselling maybe a positive choice for you right now. You may want to understand why this happens by exploring the past, or a unique one off life event or series of them. You might want to think about how and why you respond to situations in the here and now or looking towards solutions and change for now and the future.

I feel passionately about working with clients who are struggling with their emotional wellbeing. These difficulties can cause difficulties in relationships, at work and on a person's experiences of connecting with themselves and the world around them. I work sensitively and supportively with clients who have experienced a number of difficult life experiences including grief, trauma, relationship difficulties to name but a few. I can help you to feel like you develop a better more compassionate understanding of yourself and help you to feel like you are moving forward in life rather than feeling stuck and directionless.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
