As an integrative practitioner I call upon a range of concepts and therapeutic tools to help clients deal with dysfunctional ways of feeling, behaving and living. My principle belief is that despite the problems we encounter, we all have the capacity for change. sometimes this is hard to visualise, difficult to accept. problems can appear overwhelming and insurmountable. By working in collaboration with clients, as partner's with a common purpose, unhealthy rules for living and core beliefs can be challenged, this can lead clients to happier more fulfilling ways of being that reach into our untapped potential.

I prioritise a psychodynamic approach to therapy, this means that I place an importance upon the therapeutic relationship and what may be happening, consciously or unconsciously, between us within the consulting room. I assist people to become aware of conflicting, and often unconscious, aspects of themselves which can be a catalyst for self-awareness and change. Our work together would be explorative, we will be curious about your processes and how you make sense of your life experiences; from this we can we then learn to understand how past ways of being disrupt your present day living.

You will receive a safe, accepting environment, where I will listen, and support you to become more aware of how to make the right choices for yourself. I can work with self-esteem and self-image issues, and issues such as life-direction. I share the view, in modern psychology, that people thrive when they are living their life aligned with those values which hold most meaning for them. Living a meaningful, or meaning-guided life, is often at the core of many issues. Many people have never had a safe space to explore their values and assess what is ultimately meaningful to them, and I am able to offer this in our work together.

I understand that each person's therapeutic process is unique and, as an integrative, hu manistic therapist, I draw on a number of therapeutic and coaching techniques to be able support you.
I offer a safe and unconditional space for you to be heard and be free to explore your own relationship with yourself and help you process any experiences, habits or beliefs that may have negatively disrupted and impacted your sense of self and place in this world. Any experiences that told you that you were not good enough, not worthy enough, not safe enough, not lovable enough, not special enough or that told you that had no right to have any power or authority over your own life are experiences that need to be healed and released so that your connection with true self can be restored and re-established.

I am committed to supporting people in healing from relational trauma, developmental trauma, childhood trauma and interpersonal trauma of all kinds. Hu man beings are amazing, remarkable and resilient in our ability to cope with adversity. We often compartmentalise or dissociate what happens to us so we can carry on living. We also turn to all manner of addictions and behaviours that on the surface may seem disordered and destructive yet at the same time they make perfect sense. They protect us, help us to stay in control, help numb the pain, help us to survive, and help communicate our stories.

You may have many questions about whether therapy is right for you.
Whether you’re looking for help with depression, anxiety, loss, or bereavement; or whether you’re struggling to change things that are causing problems in your life, such as setting boundaries, communicating yourself, addictions, or disordered eating patterns, I offer a range of counselling and psychotherapy services that can help you work through this distress. We would achieve this by first exploring what's going on for you and helping you express how you feel inside. And then we would work on the deeper underlying causes of your feelings so that you can achieve both relief and long-lasting change.

There are many reasons why we seek therapy and would like someone to talk to.
Hi and thank you for visiting my profile. Opening up can be hard, I feel it is better to share a problem than to deal with it yourself. I enjoy helping people make sense of their experiences and finding different ways of living. I value hearing each person's story and helping you to find inner calm, clarity and understanding.

I’m Jay, a therapist who celebrates authenticity, creativity and individuality. As somebody who doesn’t quite ‘fit in’, I have experienced first-hand how it feels to be held back by debilitating anxiety, fear of abandonment, rejection and low self-worth as a result of societal messages that are all-too-often received. Feeling confused, doubtful and uncertain lead me to get the help I needed, recognising the value this brings to people's livelihood and encouraging me to give what I had received.

By exploring your thoughts you will begin to manage them, you will be more in the moment and understand why you do things which don't make sense, you will begin to make sense of the past and present, you will begin to value yourself, and your relationships can become more meaningful.
Our past and present are intimately linked by our memories. Our memories are heavily influenced and based on feelings we had surrounding an event or experience. These experiences may be impacting your life right now, even the ones that might seem irrelevant or insignificant. If we don't become aware of this connection it will keep affecting our future, which over time can cause us stress. Prolonged stress can manifest itself in physical forms, including illness, lack of energy, problems with sleep, headaches, depression and anxiety. When you are mentally healthy you are able to handle life's challenges.

When life gets hard we can find ourselves revisiting old patterns in how we treat ourselves and other people. Perhaps we reach for unhelpful ways to cope, or end up feeling ashamed and stuck. You may be looking for sessions to address a specific problem such as depression, anxiety, or addiction; or to explore the patterns that you get into in your relationships with others and yourself; or because there has been great change or loss in your life and you are wondering how you can move forward.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
