Male Counselling in Stockport
Whether you're experiencing anxiety, stress, grief, relationship challenges, or simply need someone to talk to, I offer a safe, supportive, and confidential space where you can feel heard and understood.
I have been a foster carer for over seven years, and I also grew up in a fostering family, as my own parents were foster carers. This unique perspective gives me a deep and personal understanding of life in care—both from the viewpoint of fostered children and those who care for them.
Challenges in adult life often have roots in early childhood. By exploring your beliefs and behaviours it becomes easier to navigate everyday life.

You will receive a safe, accepting environment, where I will listen, and support you to become more aware of how to make the right choices for yourself. I can work with self-esteem and self-image issues, and issues such as life-direction. I share the view, in modern psychology, that people thrive when they are living their life aligned with those values which hold most meaning for them. Living a meaningful, or meaning-guided life, is often at the core of many issues. Many people have never had a safe space to explore their values and assess what is ultimately meaningful to them, and I am able to offer this in our work together.

To put it simply, I find that people tend to want therapy for two main reasons - to make a change and to feel heard. If that's what you're looking for - to feel really heard and understood, to make a change in your life, be it a physical change or a mental one, I would be honoured to be your therapist.

My aim with therapy is to help you work out where you want to get to and help you find your ways to get there. Sometimes it can also be useful to think about what has happened to you. Working this way means we can find a path that suits you, in a collaborative way. I always keep in mind that you are the expert on you. I mainly use solution focused therapy which is a therapeutic approach that works with almost anybody and almost any issue. It is a way of identifying what a better life might be like and thinking through how to get there. I can also use techniques from CBT, psychodynamic and person centred counselling.

I work with people to understand familiar and archaic feelings of low mood, anger and being stuck, unearthing the genesis of unwanted feelings and behaviours, working with the principles of TA and the ego state model to understand why you feel the way you do. Gaining an awareness of your responses to life, your environment and the people in it. Together we will create a mutual and explicitly agreed contract for change that will serve as the focus and aim of our time together.
I'm an Integrative Psychotherapist, have been in clinic for 4 years, currently in advanced training. I see clients in person, via zoom or outdoor/walking.

Their goals are often to feel more in control, reconnect with what matters, and build lasting resilience. My role is to provide practical, evidence-based tools and supportive guidance to help break free from unhelpful cycles and create lasting change.

Sometimes life feels heavy, like you're carrying more than you can manage. You might be feeling anxious, low, stuck, or unsure where to start. Maybe you’re holding past experiences that still affect you, struggling with confidence, identity, relationships, or trying to make sense of how your mind works. You may just want to feel understood and have space to talk things through. I offer a down-to-earth, non-judgmental space where you can explore whatever’s going on, at your pace, with someone who’ll listen and support you.

I'm Jay, a practitioner who celebrates authenticity, creativity and individuality. Starting therapy can be overwhelming, especially when life asks so much of us. My goal is to create the very space that you are seeking, where you are genuinely seen, understood and held. As a late diagnosed AuDHD individual, I am well aware of the struggles we face on a daily. Masking, people pleasing, anxiety, anger and frustration towards the world, overwhelm from the demands of life, feeling othered and shamed from the messages we too often receive.

People often reach out when something in their life feels heavy, confusing or quietly overwhelming. You don’t need to have a clear story to begin. I offer a calm, confidential space where you can slow down, speak honestly, and explore what feels out of step or painful. Much of what shapes us lives below the surface — old patterns, shame, grief, relationships, the body’s responses. Therapy is a place to bring these into conversation, gently and at your pace, so that new understanding and possibilities can begin to emerge.

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
