Female Counselling in Stevenage
I practice attachment-based psychoanalytical psychotherapy both in-person and online. Working collaboratively, we'll explore how the echoes of past relationships might impact the way you think and feel today.
I offer a safe, supportive, and compassionate space where you can deepen your understanding of your inner world and make meaningful changes. My approach is grounded in empathy, curiosity, and respect for each person’s unique journey. I believe that the challenges we face often arise from early experiences and relationships, and by gently exploring these patterns together, new possibilities for healing and growth can emerge

I don’t hold a fixed idea of an “ideal client.” I am open to working with a wide range of people. What matters most to me is that the client is ready for therapy and wants a safe, supportive space to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences at your own pace.

I work with clients who are struggling with depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma, or challenges in relationships or family matters. In our initial sessions, we'll explore the background of your concerns and collaborate on a course of action to help you regain control and move forward. Many clients notice gradual symptom improvements within the first month, with sustained improvement thereafter.

Hello there, my name is Debbie and I discovered that I am autistic at the age of 40. I am also a mum to a neurodivergent child so I understand some of the unique challenges that come with being an autistic parent. You might be feeling overwhelmed, stressed or burnt out from masking. You need a therapist that understands what it's like to feel this way, in a world that wasn't built for neurodivergent minds. I named my practice Unboxed Counselling because I want to help people live more authentically and to offer therapy that truly fits neurodivergent ways of being. Counselling should fit who you are, not the other way around.

I am a warm, friendly person and a good listener. I have a very empathic understanding and vast experiences from my own personal life. This has shaped me to be the person I am today. Things from our childhoods and certain traumas, can have us acting out behaviours that can be damaging to us. I have experience working with relationship breakdowns, alcohol addiction, depression, anxiety and self harm. I have worked with adolescents and adults of all disabilities. I've worked a great deal with confidence building and low self-esteem. I can help you recognise these behaviours and what triggers them.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
