I also work with a domestic violence agency, counselling women who have experienced childhood trauma, sexual abuse, anxiety/panic, low self-esteem, and PTSD.
I have come to counselling and psychotherapy as my second career after spending over 25 years in the corporate sector as part of the human resources function for global technology companies. My desire and ability to connect with people combined with a quest to find deeper meaning in my work led me to retrain and find my true vocation. I have navigated challenging life experiences and have grown and found peace through my own personal therapy. I’m versatile in my clinical approach, drawing from a rich theoretical foundation having trained as an Integrative Psychotherapist.

Our consciousness is like a small candle in vast darkness; we must not let it go out. Sometimes when we are faced with life challenges, our mind falters like a candle in the wind; we are confused, sad, angry, or agitated, and at times like this we need listening ears to listen to us and help us decipher our experiences to make sense of what is causing these emotional reactions and pain. Sometimes, confusion and contamination of our minds can be brought about by broken relationships, job loss, bereavement, mental illness, toxic relations, racism, oppression, wrong religious beliefs, divorce and cultural influences to mention a few.

Although I sit in the counsellor’s chair now, I know what it feels like to be on the other side of it. I started where you might be now – staring at a stranger’s smile beaming out of my laptop and wondering, “can this person really help me?” The decision to contact that smiling stranger was one I never regretted.
I'm a Person Centred counsellor with almost 2 decades of experience in charitable, public sector & counselling roles, supporting vulnerable adults, young people and families. Those experiences have deepened my understanding and empathy for the challenges people can face, and they continue to shape the way I work today.

I work with a range of issues including anxiety, low mood, domestic issues, stress, memory problems, dementia and more complex and enduring problems.
I am trained to work in many different models and draw from a range of approaches. However I have learnt that working purely within one model rarely meets people's needs, so my approach is always flexible, tailored to best fit your needs. I also offer sessions to family and friends supporting those who may struggle to access therapy directly themselves.

As we begin to emerge from this challenging time, many relationships will be feeling the strain. Couple or individual counselling, either face to face or online can make such a difference, as we explore concerns and find effective ways forward.

My professional experience includes working with clients presenting anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, identity issues, grief, suicidal ideation, and complex loss.
I see you, your story, your survival strategies, your values, and the meaning behind the way you have learned to protect yourself. Before I see your symptoms.
Hello, I’m Chris Espinelli, a Qualified Integrative Counsellor, MBACP, and Level 5 CBT Therapist.
I believe therapy begins with seeing the person before seeing the symptoms, the diagnosis, or the struggle. You are not simply “an anxious person”, “a people-pleaser”, “too sensitive”, “too emotional”, or “difficult”. Very often, the ways we think, feel, respond, protect ourselves, avoid conflict, overgiven, shut down or become overwhelmed.

Many of my clients come to therapy during times of transition, stress, or uncertainty — when emotions feel overwhelming or difficult to express. Domestic Abuse Counsellors
What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.
When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.
What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.
How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
