I am a fully qualified and professional psychodynamic psychotherapist and work with a wide range of issues some of which include: depression, trauma, anger, anxiety, stress, addictions, bereavement, illness, men's issues, motherhood, women's issues , retirement, work stress, loss and relationship conflict.
I understand it can be hard to approach therapy for the first time, or maybe you are currently in need of support during an uncertain time or are feeling distressed. It can feel difficult knowing where to start. We would work together to explore your feelings, thoughts and behaviours so you can better understand yourself and others. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy can support you and give you understanding about your emotional responses to life events and skills to cope in times of stress. I offer a safe and confidential space, where you can begin to make sense of your feelings and to identify how you would like to move forward.

If you are feeling confused, stuck, anxious or just feel that you want life to be different; if you are struggling to cope with change or want to make a change but don't know where to start; if the demands made on you by other people, or by your own expectations feel overwhelming; if past experiences have left a negative impression on how you see yourself or life in general; if loss and change have left you feeling disorientated and struggling, I offer a safe space to open up in confidence and without judgement, to someone who is there to help you feel understood and move forward with a clearer sense of direction.

Motherhood is profoundly intense and triggering. You deserve to thrive, not just survive day to day, pouring your energy into other people.Clients come to me for help with things like low mood/depression, anxiety, anger, burnout, not enjoying their children and issues with relationships and self confidence. Often my clients have overcome difficult childhoods or life events and find that 'old stuff' bothers them again because of the stresses and triggers of early motherhood. You can talk to me about anything, not just parenting. I work in an LGBTQ+ and neurodiversity-affirming way.

From my experience some of the main reasons people seek counselling or therapy is their desire to change and/or to find some relief from distress. My purpose is to help you achieve this and support you during the process. Perhaps you are feeling frustrated with repeating patterns of behaviour that feel hard to understand and change. Maybe you are feeling depressed, anxious, overwhelmed, suffering with self-doubt and low self-esteem, or generally disappointed with how life is for you right now. These are just a few of the issues that I can help you with.

Asking for help can be difficult and contacting a therapist may feel scary. That’s why from our first contact I aim to create a safe, confidential non-judgemental space for you to explore your difficulties. Talking to a therapist offers a different perspective on how you feel and relate to others. We’ll draw on your past and present to find new ways to move forward for the best future for you. We can all get stuck reacting in ways that are not always useful to our wellbeing. Working with a psychotherapist brings insight into how we react, why we react that way, and changing negative patterns thinking, feeling and behaviour.

Do you worry all the time? Are you scared of what other people think of you? Does your life feel exhausting and overwhelming? Maybe it's hard to put into words exactly what life is like for you? Perhaps it’s hard for you to say no when people ask you to do things even if you don't want to do them? Maybe this affects work and relationships and stops you going out or applying for that new job or just puts you under pressure the whole time. Perhaps you feel isolated and lonely because it's just too hard to connect with others. I wonder if all you want is to feel comfortable in your own skin? If this is you - I get it, I see you.

Are you upset and overwhelmed by relationships, work situations, family issues? That sense of panic and over thinking where your body feels stressed & the anxiety rockets? Did something happen that you have not shared with anyone, or feel nobody ‘gets it’? Has it felt too big & yet needs sorting and resolving? It’s understandable to feel frustrated, anxious or angry. Dealing with those feelings while maintaining a family, job & ‘a busy life’ can feel like hard work. “There needs to be more to life” & “It needs to be better than this “ are often said. To feel free from the past, to build a confidence in yourself.

I work with people who are navigating life’s ups and downs. Perhaps you’re managing change or feeling stuck, finding relationships difficult and wondering why, or you may be struggling with loss. It could be you’re finding the Covid-19 crisis has changed things and you want to explore what that means for you. Or maybe you don’t know what you’re feeling but you know something isn’t quite right.

A warm welcome to you. I’m Celia and I work with women to strengthen their self-esteem. If you constantly feel ‘not good enough’, you’re afraid that life’s opportunities are passing you by or you’re stifled by the need to constantly people please, then self esteem counselling may be for you. We live in a high pressure world and many things can rock our self-esteem – a difficult childhood, a hurtful comment or a disappointing relationship. But self-esteem can be renewed and repaired. Many of my clients report feeling significantly better after completing our counselling sessions together.

Testimonials: "It's been positive to talk to Lauren who has allowed me to look at the way I think and help me change for the better", "I had a really positive experience and felt comfortable with Lauren. I didn't feel judged, just very supported." I've worked in NHS GP surgeries for a number of years and have a lot of experience working with young adults too. You don’t have to pretend everything is okay, therapy is a space where you can be yourself. Difficult relationships or negative life experiences, including trauma can impact your identity, self-worth and relationship to your body and with others.

You thought that becoming a parent would be exciting, but you've also felt overwhelmed, anxious and like you’re struggling to cope. There's been an expectation that you'd be happy and even ‘glowing’ but the reality has often felt very different. It has left you wondering if you’re failing or 'not doing it right' which can make it hard to say you're not OK or ask for help. If this feels like you, please know that you are not alone and that these thoughts and feelings are very common, even if they’re not often talked about.

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
