As a Clinical Psychologist specialising in parental and perinatal wellbeing, I can support you as you adjust to becoming a parent, whether this is during pregnancy , after your baby is born, following a traumatic birth or when your baby has additional health needs or has required neonatal care.
You thought that becoming a parent would be exciting, but you've also felt overwhelmed, anxious and like you’re struggling to cope. There's been an expectation that you'd be happy and even ‘glowing’ but the reality has often felt very different. It has left you wondering if you’re failing or 'not doing it right' which can make it hard to say you're not OK or ask for help. If this feels like you, please know that you are not alone and that these thoughts and feelings are very common, even if they’re not often talked about.

I am also experienced in working with clients who present with perinatal difficulties.
It can feel very daunting trying to find the right therapist for your needs and I therefore offer you a free 30 minute Zoom meeting or phonecall to meet with me to put you at ease and to see if I am the right person who can help. I have over 23 years experience in working with clients of all ages and I have particular experience in working with both adults and adolescents who find it hard to open up and talk about their problems.

Motherhood is profoundly intense and triggering. You deserve to thrive, not just survive day to day, pouring your energy into other people.Clients come to me for help with things like low mood/depression, anxiety, anger, burnout, not enjoying their children and issues with relationships and self confidence. Often my clients have overcome difficult childhoods or life events and find that 'old stuff' bothers them again because of the stresses and triggers of early motherhood. You can talk to me about anything, not just parenting. I work in an LGBTQ+ and neurodiversity-affirming way.

A warm welcome to you. I’m Celia and I work with women to strengthen their self-esteem. If you constantly feel ‘not good enough’, you’re afraid that life’s opportunities are passing you by or you’re stifled by the need to constantly people please, then self esteem counselling may be for you. We live in a high pressure world and many things can rock our self-esteem – a difficult childhood, a hurtful comment or a disappointing relationship. But self-esteem can be renewed and repaired. Many of my clients report feeling significantly better after completing our counselling sessions together.

Asking for help can be difficult and contacting a therapist may feel scary. That’s why from our first contact I aim to create a safe, confidential non-judgemental space for you to explore your difficulties. Talking to a therapist offers a different perspective on how you feel and relate to others. We’ll draw on your past and present to find new ways to move forward for the best future for you. We can all get stuck reacting in ways that are not always useful to our wellbeing. Working with a psychotherapist brings insight into how we react, why we react that way, and changing negative patterns thinking, feeling and behaviour.

A warm welcome to you. As a humanistic counsellor, my focus is to support you in re-discovering your innate sense of goodness and wholeness. Whether your troubles are underpinned by trauma or depression, our work together can build an understanding of who you are and what you need in order to find the best direction for yourself. I am also a trainee Gestalt Psychotherapist and my focus is embedded in here and now experiences. The Gestalt (roughly translated into 'Whole') approach is often helpful in grounding ourselves in 'what is' and provides a slowing down that offers space to move beyond a fixed way of being.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
