Therapy is an active process where we work together. I work with you to firstly make sense of your difficulties and then agree a plan to use therapy to work towards your goals. I am trained in a number of therapies and we can see which feels the best fit for you and your goals. I have experience working with depression, anxiety disorders such as social anxiety , phobias, GAD and OCD. I also have long term experience of teaching coping skills to manage difficult thoughts and feelings, developing acceptance and working on self esteem. I focus mainly on the here and now and always consider how therapy will get you closer to your goals.

Hello there and welcome. Sometimes life can be overwhelming for all sorts of reasons and we may need a little help to try and work our way through it. Counselling can give us the help we need, by offering a safe place to sit with someone who is there to help you through those tough times. I understand that the decision to have counselling can perhaps be a difficult one, but I believe that together we can ease those fears and anxieties. Then, as we begin to develop a therapeutic and healing relationship, you will hopefully begin to feel more able to share all that is on your mind.

As a Clinical Psychologist I am passionate about working with people to address their emotional and mental health difficulties and to achieve their treatment goals. I have a particular interest in working with addictions, trauma, and anxiety disorders and as such these are my main areas of expertise. Hi! My name is Claudia (she/her). I'm a counsellor, therapist, mother, wife, daughter, dog lover, friend among many other roles! The challenges of having all these roles made me reflect on the importance of taking care of our mental health which led to my training in Gestalt Therapy. My profession is my passion and I feel privileged to help transform lives for the better. Many times, the way we deal with our problems and needs ends up keeping us stuck, generating more and more suffering like anxiety , depression and stress.

You may be low or worried and need new ways to cope, a health professional experiencing burnout, living with a long-term health condition, struggling with appearance-related/body image concerns or want to make healthy lifestyle changes. In our sessions I will use a mixture of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing, depending on your needs. What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
