ADHD Counselling in Southampton

Ellen Bainbridge
Counsellor, MNCPS Acc.
Having ADHD naturally led me to specialise in those who suspect or know they have ADHD.
Many of my clients present to me with anxiety, low-confidence or specific mental health issues. Goals are often to feel happier, cope better at work or in relationships. Steps to achieving this tend to centre around better understanding of self and identifying what barriers we have constructed that keep us stuck. Instead of seeing an insurmountable wall, in many cases there's an opportunity for growth. My job is to help you figure out how to take your first steps and overcome fear and negativity. Often, the very first is asking for help.

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I work on an open-ended basis. It is a relational framework where we think together about the dynamics in the therapeutic relationship and how the past has contributed to your way of being. My extensive, psychoanalytically informed training means I tend to avoid simplified explanations of your experience. Instead, we take time to understand what is going on beneath the surface. The aim is to build a trusting and safe relationship where a more complete picture of yourself becomes clear and accessible.

I also offer comprehensive autism and ADHD assessments for children and adults, working with other professionals where required to follow NICE guidance.
Hi, I'm Hannah, a Clinical Psychologist with a particular interest in trauma, neurodivergence and burnout. Often people come to see me feeling overwhelmed or stuck, whether that's through anxiety, stress, difficult experiences from the past, or feeling exhausted from pushing through for too long. You may have spent a long time coping or trying to manage things on your own, but reached a point where the ways you have always coped no longer seem to be working. My job is to help you find a way through, whether that's learning new skills, processing past experiences or reconnecting with strengths you may have lost sight of.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioural therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
