Hello! I'm Sarah an accredited CBT therapist and EMDR therapist with a range of experience in most areas of mental health over a career that has spanned 20 years with the NHS. I offer treatment to adults across the UK in convenient online sessions and I also offer in person therapy in the north east. I work with anxiety presentations from low self esteem, social anxiety, OCD and health worries among others. I can also support helping people overcome low mood and depression, both by looking at how we can bring about behavioural change and challenging unhelpful thinking styles.

I use CBT, EMDR, and acceptance-based approaches to help break patterns that keep anxiety going, process difficult experiences, and feel more able to cope with day-to-day life.
Feeling overwhelmed, stuck in your thoughts, or finding it hard to switch off? I work with adults experiencing anxiety, overwhelm or cycles of worry that can feel hard to break. Life changes, ongoing pressure, or past experiences can leave people feeling drained, unsettled or unsure how to move forward. This might show up as difficulty relaxing, feeling on edge, or struggling to feel present day to day. Many appear to cope on the outside, managing responsibilities and caring for others, while feeling stretched and exhausted internally. I also have a particular interest in the challenges around pregnancy, postal and early patenthood.

I'm Craig, a therapist specialising in working with eating disorders and body image issues. Are thoughts about food or your body ruling your life? Many of us can be our own harshest critic...never feeling good enough, never feeling as if we are "enough", not wanted or unloveable...these thoughts understandably have a big impact on our wellbeing and day to day functioning. It's not just you that feels this way - many of us struggle with these thoughts and feelings at times, but particularly if we've experienced adversity or trauma, this may have become the "norm" in the way we think about ourselves. But this can change. And when we start to think about ourselves and relate differently to ourselves, the world feels like a much better place!

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
