My approach is grounded in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and is also informed by Ecotherapy, using eco-friendly and non-toxic art materials.
Sometimes it can be difficult to say how we feel. Sometimes we may not know what we are feeling, let alone how to articulate this. Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art-making as its main mode of expression and communication; art is not used as a diagnostic tool but as a medium to explore and address confusing or distressing feelings and behaviours that may not be revealed using words alone. By awakening your creativity, Art Therapy can help you to connect with yourself in order to better understand your emotions and relationships within the world, leading to positive change.

I offer an integrative approach combining humanistic and psychodynamic principles with evidence-informed techniques including Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).
My ideal client is one of complexity: someone whose experiences cannot be understood through a single label or a standardised approach. Many of my clients live with trauma, PTSD, neurodiversity, psychosis, dissociation, bereavement or deeply rooted emotional and relational patterns. Some have tried therapy before but felt only part of their experience was understood. I offer a place where the whole person can be explored, not reduced to a diagnosis, and where therapy is shaped around the individual. I am comfortable working where the picture is complicated and obvious answers have not been enough.

I am an experienced Adult Psychotherapist (Psychoanalytic / Psychodynamic ) and will often work with clients who have experienced severe and complex trauma or difficult relational issues, particularly where these have arisen in childhood and continue to be problematic in later life.
I believe that our capacity to cope with issues that arise in adult life, whether this is how we experience the world, relate to others, cope with difficult situations or understand and manage what can often be overwhelming emotions, is ultimately bound up with our early experiences. Whether we wish to or not we carry our history with us and sometimes this does not provide the strong foundation needed to engage and embrace life or weather its storms. I work with clients to recognise the origins of their difficulties so that together we might arrive at a place where life is understandable, and they feel both validated and valued.

Michelle Phillips @ Sanctuary Psychotherapy
Psychotherapist, PhD, HCPC-Art Therap.
As an art psychotherapist, sessions are not reliant on verbal communication. It's often difficult to put into words how we are feeling and thinking. Through the creative and nurturing medium of art, I help you to engage with your senses and offer the opportunity to use materials to reconnect mind and body. Art materials help with discharging difficult feelings and exploring deep emotions. I aim to empower my clients to make positive steps in between sessions by providing creative strategies that can be use day to day. Although my training is in the creative arts, I also offer traditional talking therapy.

I’ve always been interested in what lies beneath the way we think and feel, the beliefs and patterns we develop through life, but also the deeper, intuitive part of ourselves that can easily get lost amongst it all. Often people come to me because something doesn’t quite feel right, they feel stuck, overwhelmed or disconnected, or simply want to understand themselves on a deeper level. Together we begin to explore what belongs to the conditioned mind and what may be coming from somewhere deeper within.

I work integratively, drawing from Gestalt, TA, Person-Centred, and Psychodynamic approaches to suit you.
From the outside, your life looks complete. You show up, you manage, and you handle what needs to be done. But beneath that capable exterior, a quiet storm is running. You find yourself caught in loops of endless overthinking, waking up with a heavy sense of anxiety, or carrying an inner critic that constantly tells you :it isn’t enough. Whether you are navigating the raw grief of a relationship ending, a major life transition, or the echoes of past trauma, you have likely arrived at a point where you feel entirely stuck and disconnected from the person you used to be.

Working integratively, I draw on psychodynamic, person-centred, and cognitive behavioural approaches — adapting my style to suit each client, rather than fitting people into a single mode of therapy.
Having experienced the benefits of counselling myself, I understand first-hand how powerful it can be to have a space where you feel truly heard. I believe therapy works best when it feels like a genuine, human connection — a space free of judgement where you can explore what's really going on beneath the surface. Whether you're navigating anxiety, low mood, life transitions, or simply feel stuck and want to understand yourself better, I aim to offer that calm, supportive environment. As a gay man, I offer an affirming and inclusive space for LGBT+ clients and allies alike.

Psychodynamic Counsellors
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
