Hi, I'm Julie, and I am passionate about working with people who have experienced abuse or trauma, whether it be sexual, physical or emotional.
I am very experienced and trained in subjects such as trauma, EMDR, spirituality, meditation, ecotherapy, and working with the 'felt sense' of situations (Eugene Gendlin) and so can employ a variety of techniques. I have worked as a trauma counsellor for SARSAS and The Green House (both sexual abuse charities) as well as being a young people’s counsellor.

I have trained in working with various forms of abuse, trauma and addiction.
I realise that making the decision to come to counselling can be frightening or tough. Eventually an event, a situation or living with relationship difficulties, anxiety, low mood, or sadness can lead you to consider this option. You have the choice to live in a more comfortable way and I can help you with this. I work with couples and individuals, I care deeply about the work I do and the journey we take together. We will look at the issues and feelings that are present for you, provide a holding place to understand and work through them. This will lead you to start to feel the benefit of real change in you and your relationships.

Working with children and young people and my training in Trauma has given me an understanding of how we develop and learn ways to cope and adapt to difficult experiences.
We are all products of our upbringing and experiences and sometimes this can lead to problems in the present. Anxiety, low self esteem and not feeling good in relationships for example. I can work with you to unravel what this is about and help you find new ways of coping and moving forwards. We can talk or use creative methods to facilitate this discovery process. I work with young people, adults and couples and the work is all driven by you and on your terms. I offer a free, initial meeting so you can decide if I am the right Counsellor for you. I also offer Clinical Supervision for other Professional Counsellors and Trainees.

I have extensive experience with trauma and neurodiversity, and a strong understanding of how social challenges shape mental wellbeing
Hi, thank you for stopping by. If you experience the world deeply or process things differently, my approach may feel supportive. I work with adults experiencing burnout, anxiety, depression, self-doubt, relationship issues, masking and disconnection from themselves. Many of my clients are neurodivergent, highly sensitive or creative people who have spent years adapting to others' expectations while losing touch with their own needs. Living with this depth of feeling and awareness can be a strength, but it can also leave you feeling exhausted, misunderstood or unsure of who you are beneath the roles you have learned to play.

I also use EMDR to address specific past traumas and behaviours or stuck emotions that are impacting your life now.
I work with individuals and couples to find a path through their troubles. In life we experience pain, stress and anxiety for many reasons - life events, work issues, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, or feelings of low self-esteem that makes you feel stuck. We may simply feel adrift, struggling to find meaning and our place in the world. Confronting and solving problems can be a painful process which many of us avoid. Avoidance can result in greater pain and the inability to flourish both mentally and spiritually, but by working together to fully understand your issues and goals we can work towards a more fulfilled life.

Hi, I am a registered psychologist with the HCPC. I have worked in the NHS for over seventeen years including children and adolescents, adults, EIS (psychosis) and also prison mental health, so my experience is pretty varied. I believe that everybody is different and as such work to help develop an understanding of what is going on for you, before exploring what intervention is likely to be the most effective. I also complete ASC assessments as part of a multi disciplinary team adhering to NICE recommendations.

If you're struggling with difficult emotions, depression, anxiety, low self esteem, self criticism, trauma, PTSD, complex PTSD, 'personality disorder', OCD, social anxiety, grief, loss, or you find yourself confronted with difficult life changes, then you're in the right place.
We all want to enjoy the lives we have, not be bogged down in self criticism, overwhelmed by emotions, stuck in spirals of negative thinking, or be haunted by the past. If you find yourself here because you're struggling with anxiety, depression, painful emotions, self criticism, or patterns of coping that are damaging your life and your relationships, then you're in the right place. Again and again I have seen the power of compassion in releasing people from the suffering that can come with these cycles. With the right support you too can take the courageous, and sometimes painful steps towards becoming the person you'd like to be.

For almost two decades I have been working with complex and developmental trauma in adults, while training counsellors in integrative modalities.
Many of my clients are expert copers. People who have been "getting on with it" and "pushing through" all of their lives. They may have lives that look great from the outside, and feel lonely, disconnected and overwhelmed on the inside. Eventually that way of living becomes unsustainable. My clients want some inner peace and calm, connection with others, and freedom and confidence in being themselves. They leave therapy with a greater understanding of their lives, compassion for their struggles, and joy in who they have revealed themselves to be. I love the work - whether its with individuals, couples, triads, or groups.

Navigating life can sometimes be challenging, invoking painful emotions and ways of coping and adapting, which may cause further pain. You may be experiencing difficult emotions, poor mental or physical health and/or been affected by significant life events, which are impacting your day-to-day life and your connection to yourself and others. You may be looking for a safe place to process your past and present experiences and feelings, without fear of judgement.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
