We are all products of our upbringing and experiences and sometimes this can lead to problems in the present. Anxiety, low self esteem and not feeling good in relationships for example. I can work with you to unravel what this is about and help you find new ways of coping and moving forwards. We can talk or use creative methods to facilitate this discovery process. I work with young people, adults and couples and the work is all driven by you and on your terms. I offer a free, initial meeting so you can decide if I am the right Counsellor for you.
I also offer Clinical Supervision for other Professional Counsellors and Trainees.

This might mean learning new skills, working safely through past trauma, changing old coping strategies such as addictions, unhealthy behaviour patterns.
If you have experienced trauma as a result of your past and you find that is affecting you and your relationships in the present, I can help you gently explore these difficulties and support you to make the changes you need to make. Through childhood experiences and life events we try to fit into the world we live in. From very early on we tend to adapt ourselves to meet the needs of others, to be loved, liked and accepted. We twist and manage ourselves into expected ways of being and mask what is really going on for us. In doing this we lose the sense of who we are before we ever know.

Some of my specialised interests include: addiction, LGBTQIA+ support, and male and non-binary survivors of abuse.
Clients sometimes ask what it’s actually like to sit with me. My hope is that you’ll feel the same trust and ease you might with a close friend, but with the professional boundaries that create a safe therapeutic environment. What you need comes first.

I bring lived experience of managing mental challenges and addictions.
We can’t change what’s happened to us, and we can't change what we’ve done - but we can change how we think and relate to our experience, and this in turn can change how our experiences feel to us in the here and now. I create a safe space for a therapeutic conversation and work with people to untangle unhelpful narratives, and knit together new ones.

I have worked for many years helping my clients to accept themselves for who they are and how they survive in the hidden world that goes on inside their heads, the world where fear holds them back and keeps them stuck. The world we are all familiar with, the place we go when we put our heads on our pillows at night and we know! I believe that through honest exploration, reflection and acceptance of our past, we can start to accept ourselves and begin to build our self-esteem, self respect, our confidence and compassion for ourselves. We can embrace the parts of us that work and let go of the parts that don't, we can change.

My main aim as a therapist is to help you understand and accept yourself and to feel connected to your feelings and authentic desires for life. We can do this in a number of ways, for example: processing difficult experiences from the past; looking at patterns in your life and where they come from; exploring what is blocking you from doing what you want. How we work together will depend entirely on what feels right and helpful to you; and what you want to get out of therapy. The most important thing is that we build a safe and trusting relationship and then we can take it from there.

My clinical background includes extensive work at a specialist charity supporting individuals through the complexities of active addiction, recovery, trauma, and abuse.
I am a dedicated psychotherapeutic counsellor trained in a pluralistic approach. This means I don't believe in a "one-size-fits-all" model. Instead, I collaborate with you to find the methods that best suit your unique needs. By integrating elements of Psychodynamic theory, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and a Person-Centred core, I tailor our sessions to respect your individual pace and goals.

Some of the most common issues I’m used to working with are anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship issues (past or current), anger, guilt, shame, trauma, climate anxiety/grief and suicide.
My key aim is to help you experience more agency in your inner world: to notice, name, and relate to your feelings with greater understanding. By doing so, you can respond rather than react – developing more choice, self-trust, and flexibility in how you meet yourself and others.

Addiction Counsellors
What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
