Hello and welcome to my profile. You've taken the most important first step to finding some help. Life can be pretty tough at times. Hard feelings do pass, but sometimes we get stuck and need help to gain insight and options to manage those feelings. I provide a safe space for you to explore what is going on. I work in a mindful way to reduce any anxiety you may be feeling and, if you would like, we can be creative using visualisation, art materials and toys to help you unlock things that you may not be able to put into words.

People seek counselling and psychotherapy for various reasons. Not everyone knows what is bothering them. Often it is the difficulties and challenges of daily life that become overwhelming and unmanageable, impacting relationships, work and decision making. It is sometimes beyond the control of the individual to address those issues without professional help.

Your voice, your experiences, your thoughts, your feelings matter. Most importantly YOU matter. As your therapist, I understand that there is not a one size fits all approach to counselling. Your experiences are unique to you and together we can work with an approach and pace that works for you so you can get the very best out of therapy. I am here to listen and support you though whatever it is that you are finding difficult without judgement. No matter what anyone else has told you, if it is important to you, it is important to me too. Your Story Matters.

Throughout life, we can experience all sorts of challenges and sometimes we may need some extra support to work through them. Many people find the prospect of counselling daunting at first but I work with my clients to create a space where we establish trust so that they feel comfortable in sharing how they are feeling. I understand that whatever difficulties you are experiencing will be personal to you and I know how important it is that they are treated that way regardless of what might be going on for others around you.

"Dianne helped my husband and I bridge seemingly impossible gaps in our understanding of each other and ability to communicate despite considerable differences. Dianne took us from a place where we encountered apparently unresolvable emotional blockages daily, from a place of frustration and chronic misunderstanding to a place where we were able to appreciate each other's feelings and show love to one another increasingly unreservedly. She was skilfully professional, without ever faltering in compassion or humanity. She has given us the tools we needed to succeed in our marriage and we are hugely grateful for her help. " Annon

It can be a daunting, nervous and courageous step when accessing psychological support and reading this means that you have already thought about this, which is an achievement! It can sometimes be difficult to prioritise and give importance to our own needs, it can make us feel guilty or undeserving. However, I believe self-care and self-love, are at the root of living a healthy well-being. I have a positive working attitude and strongly believe in creating an open and honest therapeutic relationship. I use different psychological frameworks and tailor my approach to effectively support my clients with their psychological distress.

My counselling approach combines aspects of Person Centred Therapy, Transactional Analysis and Psychodynamic Therapy. As a counsellor my job is to help you to both make sense of what is happening to you and to find a way to live with the challenges you are facing. You may be feeling out of sorts but unsure why. You may have a specific issue such as bereavement, anger, life transition, anxiety, low mood, etc. Maybe you would like to feel less stressed and happier with your life? Let go of overthinking, perfectionism or people pleasing? Be more confident in your decisions? Improve your relationships? Work through negative baggage that is holding you back? Develop different ways of coping? Manage your work-life balance Start to value yourself more? Learn ways to manage your anger better? If you can relate to any of the above, I can help you to work through these challenges.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
