Counselling can be an extra support; giving children the added time and space needed to work through their worries and feelings.
Life brings all sorts of challenges and some can be much harder to overcome than others. Most adults can remember a time when they were dealing with a situation so tough that everyday living became more challenging than usual. For children and young people, who have not had time to develop their own coping strategies, such situations are even more difficult to cope with. Many children who are having a difficult time do not know what it is that they are feeling and cannot put it into words. Counselling for children and young people might be slightly different to the traditional idea of therapy you may have in mind.

Perhaps you’re tired of the constant hum of anxiety, the lingering shadow of past experiences, or a quiet depression that dulls life's colors.
My approach isn't one-size-fits-all. Instead, I integrate a range of evidence-based tools to provide you with a practical toolkit of skills. We'll work together to help you understand your thoughts and feelings, giving you greater clarity on what is causing you distress. This process will help you develop a clear sense of direction and feel more in control.

For the past 25 years I have worked as a counsellor / psychotherapist. I also offer supervision to qualified and trainee therapists. Over the years I have gained a broad range of experience working with people from all walks of life, and from many cultures resulting in a good understanding of the requirements of both private individuals and corporate clients. My client base is broad and includes everyone from factory workers to professional footballers and actors. I feel it is important that a therapist can relate to their clients and this is something I excel at.

I also work with anxiety, depression, stress and low self-esteem, and offer neurodiversity-affirming therapy for ADHD and autistic adults.
If work has pushed you past your limits, you may recognise the pattern. Exhausted but wired. Irritable with people you care about. Unable to switch off, and starting to wonder whether this is burnout or something more like depression. Many of my clients are professional men who carried this for a long time before contacting anyone. Therapy with me is confidential and practical, and we work to a plan agreed between us.

As a clinical psychologist, I specialise in offering therapy for relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, and difficulties with anger.
"Dianne helped my husband and I bridge seemingly impossible gaps in our understanding of each other and ability to communicate despite considerable differences. Dianne took us from a place where we encountered apparently unresolvable emotional blockages daily, from a place of frustration and chronic misunderstanding to a place where we were able to appreciate each other's feelings and show love to one another increasingly unreservedly. She was skilfully professional, without ever faltering in compassion or humanity. She has given us the tools we needed to succeed in our marriage and we are hugely grateful for her help. " Annon

I work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, overwhelm, burnout, low self-esteem and the feeling of having lost connection with themselves.
Our sessions take place within a private area of the woods. In this setting the woodland is more than just a location; it is an integral part of the therapeutic process that helps us to bring about a deeper connection to your own internal experience. We work outside across the seasons, allowing the changing landscape to support and reflect your own process.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
