I’m a fully qualified integrative counsellor with extensive experience in relationships, sexual abuse/violence and dependencies.
My client base is varied, but sexual violence and addiction are my areas of expertise — drawing on many years of clinical experience. I help individuals and couples reclaim themselves, set healthy boundaries, build coping strategies and exploring relationship dynamics and the impact the trauma has.

Are you struggling with grief and sadness, suffering alone following a bereavement or loss? Maybe you have lost a loved one, a much-wanted baby, a close relationship or an important job. Perhaps you are finding it difficult to cope with everyday responsibilities or have problems with sleeping, appetite or engaging with life. Grief is exhausting and you can find yourself feeling overwhelmed, lost and fearful of the future. It might feel difficult to share some emotions such as guilt, jealousy or relief with friends and family, for fear of judgement.

As a counsellor, I practice in a pluralistic way which means I draw upon different theoretical approaches when I work with you as an individual – after all, there is only one of you in the world! My aim is to attune to your individual needs and I strive to work in an authentic down to earth way that is interactive and collaborative. Counselling can be daunting so I will work with you at your pace, offering you a space that is non-judgemental, respectful and confidential. Everyone is different, but having a space to talk and actually be heard can be extremely powerful and healing; leading to a greater understanding of yourself.

The most important thing I can do for you is to help you understand yourself better, to know why you do the things you do and find certain situations difficult. I work with people who want to understand why they can't assert themselves, find enjoyment in life, make friends, recover from bereavement or the end of a relationship, why they get so angry, have addictions, obsessions and intrusive thoughts or why they don't know what to do about a partner who is controllling or abusive. Alternatively, I can offer EMDR, which is a treatment for trauma and other experiences from the recent or distant past which have adversely affected you.

I am an Integrative Counsellor (MBACP) and I work with adults and couples both in-person and online on a wide range of behavioural, emotional, and relationship issues. Although I am trained in a range of modalities, including person-centred, cognitive, existential and relational approaches, my primary orientation is psychodynamic. I work with clients to gently explore unconscious processes, defence mechanisms, resistance and the dynamics of transference that often shape our relationships and behaviours. My approach is always collaborative and tailored to what feels most helpful for each individual.

People usually seek therapy because they have reached a crisis point in their life and are struggling to cope alone. This can lead to feeling stuck or creating unhelpful behaviour patterns to cope which present them from living life to their full potential. We often feel confused, anxious, depressed, emotionally numb or trapped in our past without clear goals in life or clear identity. I can offer you a safe space to explore better internal understanding which promotes self awareness, personal growth and inner peace which enables you to feel full of hope and clarity to achieve personal success.

Whatever you bring into your counselling I want to support you to uncover any difficulties holding you back to enable you to start living the life that you want.

'Big stuff' or 'small stuff', it's all ok to bring up and may also include include feeling overwhelmed or lost, self-esteem issues, guilt, relationship problems, trauma, sexual abuse, loss and grief, heath concerns and existential worries.
I trained in a 'relational integrative' approach which is an up-to-date blend of effective mainstream therapy styles. I'm a BACP-registered counsellor, trained at an NHS training institute which is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. We focus on exactly what it is you want to look at, confidentially and non-judgementally.

I have supported clients going through bereavement and loss, suffering with anxiety and panic attacks; depression; low self-esteem; self-worth issues; and with survivors of domestic abuses including sexual abuse (male and female) and trauma.
When life feels out of focus it's good to talk. My name's Carolyne and I'm a trained integrative counsellor. I can support you to restore your self-confidence, work through your issues and help you recognise you matter too! Everyone’s unique as are our experiences. Something that is overwhelming or difficult to process for you may not be the same for those around you and that’s ok. I’m here to help you unpick what is going on for you in a safe, non-judgemental and confidential environment. So, rather than ignoring the elephant in the room, lets invite it in and talk.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
