Hi, my name is Karen Cromwell and I’m a qualified counsellor and supervisor, with over 30 years experience in private practice and 13 years in NHS. I am a registered member of BACP. If you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious, low, or unsure why life feels difficult right now, you are not alone. Many people come to counselling at a time when relationships feel strained, emotions feel heavy or the way forward is unclear. I can help you learn specific ways of dealing with these challenges, and I can offer you a safe, confidential space where you can talk openly, be truly heard, and start to make sense of what's happening for you.

So alongside talking therapy I draw gently on body-based, somatic practices, helping you release what you’ve been holding rather than only thinking your way through it.
Something has brought you here. Maybe it’s stress that won’t let up, anxiety that has made the world feel smaller or a loss that has changed the shape of things. Maybe you’re not sure exactly what it is - only that something needs to shift. I work with young people (16+) and adults navigating stress and anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties and the harder chapters of life. Many of the people I see are functioning on the outside while carrying something heavier underneath - tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix, holding it together but not quite themselves.

My ideal client may feel overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected — perhaps struggling with anxiety, low mood, stress, or the impact of difficult relationships. They might be a parent balancing responsibilities, someone navigating change or loss, or a neurodivergent adult wishing to live more authentically and be truly understood. What they need is a safe, non-judgemental space to pause, feel heard, and make sense of their experiences. Their goals often include managing emotions, improving relationships, building resilience, and developing confidence, connection, and a stronger sense of self-worth.

I believe that a genuine caring relationship is key to having a good experience of therapy and I truly believe that working with me should feel beneficial and empowering for you. Through counselling you may realise that you want to change some things in your life. Initially, the realisation may be quite unsettling, so counselling gives you the space and time to process what feels truly right for you in a trusting, non judgemental relationship.  In a nutshell counselling is not a quick fix that will remove discomfort immediately, but it may be a relief to find someone who understands. Supervision sessions available too.

Hello! Welcome, and well done for getting here. Taking the first step to getting help is often the hardest one. People seek therapy for a variety of reasons, whether they are feeling stuck and overwhelmed, in a 'funk' that they can't seem to snap out of, or for troubling emotions that are difficult to shake. You might have a clear goal of what you want to work through, such as past events or difficult challenges life has thrown, or you might not. That's ok - my role is to work with you to figure it all out

I am currently in the fourth year of my Diploma in Body Psychotherapy and have begun my clinical practice alongside my studies. Body Psychotherapy, also known as Somatic Psychotherapy, recognises that life experiences are carried not only in the mind but also in the body. I am a registered and highly qualified psychotherapist with over 30 years in both the NHS and private sector. I offer a protected space to talk about your problems and feelings, confidentially and in confidence. My process is to listen carefully to your concerns trying to fully understand and experience what it’s like in your shoes. I then consider how to you deal with negative thoughts and feelings you have. Sometimes in my work, in the endeavor to understand, I try to get to the heart of things. Listening carefully to your problems trying to find out what's causing the difficulties and then helping you to find solutions.

I am an integrative psychotherapist passionate about somatic therapy.
I believe every person has an innate capacity for growth, healing, and change. Sometimes life experiences, relationships, stress, or difficult circumstances can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves. Therapy offers an opportunity to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the values, strengths, and wisdom that have always been there, even if they feel difficult to access right now. My role is not to tell you who you should become. It is to walk alongside you with curiosity, compassion, and evidence-informed practice as you discover what meaningful change looks like for you.

Do you find yourself overthinking conversations, worrying about how you're perceived, or feeling responsible for holding relationships together? You may appear capable on the outside, yet inside feel anxious, self-critical, or not quite enough. Perhaps you find it difficult to trust yourself, put the needs of others before your own, or feel caught in patterns that leave you feeling stuck. Difficulties in relationships, anxiety and self-doubt are rarely random. They often reflect deeper patterns formed earlier in life. Ways of coping that once felt necessary can later become exhausting or limiting.

Somatic Counsellors
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
