Psychodynamic and systemic training and 20 years of experience working for Relate and privately means I can support clients experiencing a wide range of family and personal issues.
I work with couples, individuals and students from yr6 upwards. My training allows me to support clients to change, by raising their awareness of what they're doing and the effect of their choices on them and others. The main areas I look at are communication, how they listen and respond to others and why they respond in that way. Once the client is aware of where the response is coming from they can begin to adjust it, to fit the situation in front of them. I work with couples and children experiencing separation and loss either now or in the past, and help them to understand and regulate their feelings.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is your journey to unlock the past, inform the present and expand the future, and together we can look at what is causing you concern to help you better deal with life’s troubles.
I am a qualified psychotherapist having trained at the world renowned Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust. As well as running my own private practice I volunteered at Sutton Counselling & worked at an inpatient treatment centre for ex-service men and women dealing with PTSD. It is here, as well as a voluntary role with my local NHS IAPT service, that I gained extensive experience of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Because of this training & experience I am able to offer short and long term therapy using both psychodynamic and CBT methods. Online therapy has meant that I have worked successfully with clients across the globe

Are you going through a bereavement? Are you struggling with anxiety? Have you been suffering with low mood? Do you feel lost, alone or confused? Being human can be tough and we can all experience difficulties with our mental health. This does not mean you are broken or need to be ‘fixed’, but instead you are having a normal human response to an abnormally painful, difficult or scary experience - it can help to talk.

Whatever you're experiencing, the therapeutic relationship nurtures a confidential space where you're truly listened to, and met with a balance of warmth, empathy and respectful challenge. I am a registered and highly qualified psychotherapist with 30 years in both the NHS and private sector. I offer a protected space to talk about your problems and feelings, confidentially and in confidence. My process is to listen carefully to your concerns trying to fully understand and experience what it’s like in your shoes. I then consider how to you deal with negative thoughts and feelings you have. Sometimes in my work, in the endeavor to understand, I try to get to the heart of things. Listening carefully to your problems trying to find out what's causing the difficulties and then helping you to find solutions.

I am a Person-Centered counsellor (Person-center means, client led) who uses CBT and Solution Focused techniques where suitable. My background includes yoga, reiki, meditation, aromatherapy and mindfulness. This means I can offer an holistic approach to the therapeutic work. The relationship between myself and the client (you) is at the heart of ALL therapy. Counselling is about change, and change can be very difficult and scary to do. In fact, sometimes we actually don't know how to do it. With support from myself, we will explore your anxiety, concerns, behavior, beliefs and feelings.

As a counsellor for 20 years and a supervisor for 10, I now primarily offer supportive counselling supervision via Zoom and Face2Face. I work pluralistically, looking at all aspects of the supervision process .I enjoy working with counsellors who see clients of any age but I am particularly interested in supervising counsellors working with young people, having worked with them myself creatively for many years. My initial training was psychodynamic , but now use principles and processes of other modalities. I am currently training in post abuse trauma work.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
