Hello, I'm Michael, a BACP-accredited therapist and counsellor offering face-to-face and remote sessions, by phone or video call. I use the person-centred approach to therapy, one of the main approaches taught and used in the UK. I've worked with many clients experiencing anxiety, depression, anger, shame, grief and many of the other emotional difficulties of life. I offer a free introductory call, so you can get a better sense of how it might be to work with me. This is also a chance to let me know more about your situation, if you'd like to, and find out how therapy might help you.

I offer a bespoke, creative therapy service tailored to the very individual needs of each of my clients. Although each client is unique, my clients are all motivated to change.

I work with couples, individuals and students from yr6 upwards. My training allows me to support clients to change, by raising their awareness of what they're doing and the effect of their choices on them and others. The main areas I look at are communication, how they listen and respond to others and why they respond in that way. Once the client is aware of where the response is coming from they can begin to adjust it, to fit the situation in front of them. I work with couples and children experiencing separation and loss either now or in the past, and help them to understand and regulate their feelings.

Historic experiences can impact our emotions and behaviours, often many years after the events. I’m here to provide a safe space to explore and make sense of what happened to you. We’ll work together to explore ways to manage the psychological and physiological effects of trauma, and develop your confidence to cope and overcome difficulties. I support people who have anxiety, depression, flashbacks and ptsd. It is important to me to understand what is important to you. I will support and empower you to live your life in accordance with your own values and beliefs, rather than the difficulties that have been getting in your way.

Life can be tough, and most of the time we've done our best to navigate our way through it. Sometimes, though, we find ourselves struggling; we can't manage as well as we used to, and we could do with someone to talk to. If you are struggling, and are looking for support, I can offer you a regular safe space to help you explore your difficulties, and move towards a less stressful, anxious or overwhelming position in life. We will work together with curiosity; exploring who you are, who you were, and who you might want to be. Therapy is a great way to invest in yourself and realise the best version of you.

Psychological and emotional distress are part of being human, I can help you identify and clarify the distress, then think about goals and changes that would be helpful to make. Together we find the barriers to these changes and work creatively to overcome them. I base my approach in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; CBT. This therapy continues to develop and be successfully adapted to a wide range of presentations and clinical situations, its strength being that it combines making flexible, practical changes which fit in with your values. Over time we can get used to doing things one way and sometimes need help to find alternatives.

Maybe you just feel flat or unmotivated, or perhaps you're finding life hard to face after losing someone close to you. If any of this resonates with how you feel, I can help you.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
