Sometimes it’s difficult to know where you can turn to talk through family issues and get some help. Often those closest to you are very involved themselves. Or you don’t want to worry them. It may be that you don’t know where to turn. I am a highly experienced Child Psychotherapist. I offer therapy and mental health support for children and young people and consultation to the people who care for them. Therapy provides a safe space to explore issues that might be troubling someone, be it anxiety, stress and unhappiness; separation and loss; worries about school; gender and sexuality; low self esteem or any number of other things.

Coming to counselling allows you to the space and time to think deeply about yourself and your relationships. I hope to help you do this in a warm, open and thoughtful way. The focus of our sessions is your needs which we will talk about throughout our work. We may consider patterns of relating to others, particularly those patterns of which you are unaware. Often our work together will explore how past experiences might be affecting the present and how your internal world, often built for the past, can unhelpfully affect important aspects of your day-to-day life.

“I don’t know how to keep going like this.” That’s something I often hear from clients.
Maybe you feel numb, overwhelmed, or like you’ve drifted so far from yourself that you barely recognise who you are. You might be grieving, going through something hard with someone you love, living with self-doubt, or feeling stuck in a life that doesn’t quite fit. Things feel heavy, and you want space to breathe, to feel understood, and to slowly find your way through.

I believe that it's through a secure therapeutic relationship that an individual can gain self awareness, insight and a deeper understanding of their feelings and concerns to grow, to re engage in life and move forward to reach their full potential.

I believe that we all have a right to a happy, fulfilling life and that sometimes this feels hard to achieve due to things in our past or present lives. As an EMDR Psychotherapist, I specialise in helping you work through such difficulties, so that you can live the life you really want. I offer a calm, empathetic, non-judgmental space and as a sensitive, culturally aware practitioner, welcome you as you are with what you bring. I offer both short and longer term work and see EMDR as a particularly powerful means of experiencing positive change in a relatively short period of time.

Our daily lives involve so many demands that it can be an effort to take a break and give some proper attention to our own wellbeing. Talking through your concerns with someone outside your world gives you the freedom to focus on yourself. I will listen with compassion and understanding and I'll get to know your experience of being you. I won’t tell you what to do or what choices to make because you know yourself better than anyone. Together we will explore what you're dealing with, identify what’s not working, and consider what changes you might want to make.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.
Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
