I have experience of working with people with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, ADHD, childhood abuse, loss, trauma, anger, drug and alcohol use and other addictions.
I believe that every person has their own unique story. What happens in our lives as our story unfolds shapes who we are, how we see and experience the world and how we feel about it and fit within it. Counselling can help people discover who they are, learn about their relationships, understand past events, help them get a deeper understanding of themselves, who they are and learn new ways to live their lives and discover who they are. Counselling can help people change from feeling that their story is being written for them and learn how to start writing it for themselves. I currently have some availability to take new clients.

I am also helping companies and HR managers with creating well-being support & positive changes returning to the 'hybrid' way of working following COVID 19. I also offer Supervision to other practitioners.

Therapy can help those who would like to: make sense of the past; handle emotions differently; overcome feelings of depression or anxiety; improve relationships with others; live life with more passion, confidence and contentment; be free of self-doubt or shame; make professional changes; improve performance; make difficult choices; move beyond abuse or trauma; deal with things that hold them back in life. I offer support and also, at times, some challenge to help you move beyond your comfort zone and get you where you'd like to be. Reaching out for help can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but it is an act of self-care.

If you've noticed you're not feeling the same joy you used to and your worrying about things you didn't used to but you're not sure anyone can help counselling really is the first step towards feeling so much better. I know my life was changed by my own counselling journey and that is why I do what I do. When we understand where are negative patterns stem from we have the ability to change our whole lives and break the cycle for our own children. There are reasons why you are struggling and together we can figure out why you are so stuck. Life can feel so much better and this really is the first step.

I would say that an important element of analytic work is that it helps to build real internal strength, not the sort of strength that is defensive against feelings, but one that can begin to really know and accept yourself. For People who make good use of analytic work, it can provide translatable skills that help deal with ongoing difficulties, not just the ones that brought you to therapy. Analytic therapy isn’t for everyone and it tends to be relatively longer term work, dealing with issues that have likely been problematic for many years.

My person-centred modality carries the core belief that we are all born innately good. Things happen to us along our journey in life. Learnt behaviour and experiences shape our thoughts and feelings in our development. We can repeat our reactions to circumstances when they occur in adulthood. We can become unconscious of our behaviours because of the busy lives we lead. It's as if our experiences stick to us like "papier mache' " in the developmental years, forming a different self. This can be an uncomfortable and unwelcome reality that we want to change in adulthood or when it becomes painful, but we often do not know how to.

We all have times when we feel that life is getting on top of us. This is a natural part of all our realities, and our movement through these times is part of our overall growth and development as a person. Often we can successfully negotiate these difficult times or events ourselves, but sometimes we may decide that we need some support. I specialise in working on a one-to-one basis with young people and adults from a wide variety of backgrounds. I have a wealth of experience in education and work with young people, families and adults as both a teacher and a counsellor. I have also bee a volunteer counsellor at an NHS Trust.

Fully DBS checked and approved. My clients are looking for support with burnout, insomnia, anger, phobias, anxiety, depression, trauma, bereavement, PTSD, panic attacks and/or eating disorders. I use a variety of approaches to address my clients unique needs. Many successful treatment plans will utilise a foundation of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, then quickly move toward a tailored treatment plan and approach that includes tools to help sustain the growth experienced in regular therapy. Clients may also require 24-hour service to clients including crisis management. My approach is gentle, compassionate and empathetic.

Our mental health is connected with how we feel about ourselves and our life experiences. I offer a safe counselling relationship in which you can better understand these experiences, the challenges and struggles you face, and work out how you can respond. I will work to create a relationship with you in which you can feel safe enough to talk about difficult or painful experiences, thoughts and feelings. I will not judge you, no matter what you need to talk about. My aim is to help you start to connect with and feel differently about yourself. This can lead to greater self-awareness and acceptance.

Alcohol Use Counsellors

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
