Psychodynamic Counselling in Shipley
Reaching out can be difficult. Maybe you feel stuck, anxious, unsettled, lost your way, or uncomfortable with whom you have become. The difficulties within our lives can change who we are or how we see the world. It can lead to thoughts or behaviours that take us away from who we are, resulting in a feeling of something not being right, struggling to cope or to make sense of things. When entering therapy, our life experiences enter too, and healing occurs within the processing. We will work together to build trust and explore your emotions and thoughts within a non-judgemental and safe environment, working at your own pace.

Are you feeling stuck in cycles of anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or low mood?
Do you find yourself overwhelmed by worry, panic, or experiences from the past that won’t seem to settle?
Are you ready to understand yourself more deeply and start making meaningful, lasting change?
From an early age, I’ve been drawn to understanding the complexities of the human mind and how we navigate life’s challenges. That curiosity, combined with a genuine commitment to supporting others, has shaped my path into psychotherapy.

Psychodynamic, psychoanalytic and group analytic approaches show we can understand and change our current experience through looking at how our previous experiences have shaped and affected us.
In my experience the most effective ways to deal with emotional and psychological difficulties problems are to address the underlying causes. This often involves understanding how you got to where you are now, including the impact others have had on you. Finding ways of improving your relationships is also often central to being able to make changes and feeling more able to deal with the challenges you face.

You have tried to manage the unmanageable, using alcohol or substances as a highly effective anaesthetic catching up with you. You know now that the problem isn't the substance itself; the substance was just a solution a maladaptive one to a deeper pre-existing internal issue. Your searching for peace and serenity and to feel a sense of well being with life on a journey to happiness.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
