I also use EMDR to help people recover from traumatic memories.
CBT is the leading therapy for depression and anxiety. It uses evidence based treatment interventions to help individuals develop the knowledge and skills needed to overcome emotional difficulties. If you feel that you are stuck in a vicious cycle of feeling depressed, upset, and anxious, I can help you to notice and change problematic thinking styles and behaviour patterns so you can feel better and take control of your life.

I predominantly use schema therapy to help you understand why you might behave and think in unhelpful ways, as well incorporating Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing ( EMDR) to resolve any past or recent trauma.
I use the following techniques: 1. Using chairs to represent parts (or modes) of the self to encourage insight and promote change by addressing/challenging negative traits and developing more healthy parts. 2. 'Rescripted Imagery' to process past trauma and enable positive change to take place. 3. EMDR to assist in resolving trauma from the past.

Hi, I am Joshua, a professional counsellor and a registered member of the BACP. I understand how daunting it can feel to look for a counsellor and to work out whether someone will feel like the right fit. My aim is to offer a calm, transparent, and supportive starting point, so you have a clear sense of how I work and what you can expect. My approach is relational and integrative, with the therapeutic relationship at the centre of meaningful change. I work in a way that recognises how our experiences are held not only in our thoughts, but also in our bodies and in our patterns of relating to others.

I use EMDR, IFS and heart-focused techniques to help heal your past wounds and present issues.
I offer gentle therapy and coaching for sensitive adults who have lost themselves through difficult life events, prolonged stress, or years of people-pleasing. When you’ve learned to adapt, stay quiet, or put your own needs aside to feel safe or fit in, you may feel overwhelmed, stuck in repeating patterns, or disconnected from your true self and your deeper needs. Together we'll work at the pace of your nervous system, helping you heal old wounds and restore inner balance by reconnecting with your inner wisdom and reclaiming your authentic self. You don’t need fixing, just a supportive space where you can remember who you are.

EMDR Counsellors
Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimising its ability to trigger anxiety.
