Domestic Abuse Counselling in Shipley
We all have those times when things get on top of us; when we feel overwhelmed, anxious, depressed and unable to cope. We can feel stuck, trapped and that there’s no way forward. Perhaps work and the daily struggles of life are dragging you down? You’re feeling frazzled, stressed and anxious and can’t see a way out? Any one of these can take its toll on your self-confidence, we lose our mojo and everyday life just feels like an uphill struggle.
Therapy can give you that much needed time and space to get a fresh perspective on what’s troubling and help you to find new ways of dealing with whatever life’s throwing at you right now.

I believe people thrive when they feel seen, heard, and understood. My therapeutic approach is integrative but rooted in a person centred base. I don’t assume there is a “right” way for a person to heal or grow and adapt my approach to the needs and goals of each client, working with curiosity, kindness and integrity.
Whether you're anxious, have low self-esteem, are experiencing workplace stress, going through grief and loss, or simply need someone to talk with to try and make sense of what's going on for you - you will be offered acceptance exactly as you are while talking to a real person.

Reaching out can be difficult. Maybe you feel stuck, anxious, unsettled, lost your way, or uncomfortable with whom you have become. The difficulties within our lives can change who we are or how we see the world. It can lead to thoughts or behaviours that take us away from who we are, resulting in a feeling of something not being right, struggling to cope or to make sense of things. When entering therapy, our life experiences enter too, and healing occurs within the processing. We will work together to build trust and explore your emotions and thoughts within a non-judgemental and safe environment, working at your own pace.

It is rare to find someone who sincerely and genuinely cares, accepts us without judgement, or has true understanding empathy for us. People often tell us how we should feel or how they think we should deal with our situation, not theirs. Sometimes even with conditions, otherwise we face consequences. Thinking of what benefits them, not us. Looking at things from their perspective, not ours.
This can lead to pressure to handle things in a way we do not want to and being in a place we do not want to be. Living an unhappy unfilled life where our feelings are ignored and unmet. Resulting in being in a very lonely isolated place.

I'm experienced in working with people recovering from domestic abuse and struggling with identity following major life changes, with considerable experience counselling parents and carers.
Putting into words how we feel can be daunting. We can find ourselves worrying that we won’t be understood, feeling safer to keep things bottled up. Therapy can be an opportunity to help find the words, confront beliefs we hold about ourselves or our experiences, and explore new ways we want to live our lives. Often narratives embed themselves in our relational patterns with others. You may feel like you’re never good enough, like you can never let your guard down or are longing for real connection but feeling unseen in relationships. Carrying these beliefs around alone can be incredibly isolating and can leave us feeling lost.

Domestic Abuse Counsellors
What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.
When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.
What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.
How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
