Hello, my name is Sean. I am a person-centred therapist. Accredited by the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society. I have experience in counselling adults and young people as well as 11 years’ experience supporting people with mental health difficulties. I know that life can bring challenges that can be understood better through sharing with a skilled listener. I also know that it is very difficult to reach out and ask to be heard. Baring this in mind, I offer a friendly, non-judgmental, and confidential space where you can explore your emotions and experiences.

Many people come to therapy feeling caught in recurring relationship patterns that are difficult to shift. Conversations may escalate quickly, or there may be a growing sense of distance, frustration, or emotional disconnection over time. These experiences often feel confusing and isolating, especially when they seem to repeat in similar ways. I work with adults who experience cycles of relationship conflict, anger or anxiety, and want to better understand what is happening beneath the surface.

I work with individuals navigating identity issues, anxiety, trauma, addiction.
Life can be incredibly heavy, and sometimes the ways we’ve learned to cope just aren't enough anymore. Whether you are navigating the suffocating fog of depression, the constant hum of anxiety, or the complex layers of identity and trauma, I am here to hold space for you. Our journey begins by gently identifying the specific hurdles you are facing. Then, we will create a personalised treatment plan—one designed specifically to help you reclaim your life and feel like "you" again. I believe therapy should be more than just talk; it should lead to tangible change. Many of my clients notice a significant lifting of their symptom.

I have supported individuals around their mental health, housing, addiction and employment needs and have worked with people from a variety of backgrounds and communities.
I'm Andy and as a qualified person-centred counsellor, I strongly believe we all have the ability to navigate life's challenges by drawing on our own experience and capabilities. My role is to invite clients to explore whatever they choose in order to gain a deeper understanding of how it's impacting them, enabling them to create positive change. I do this through actively listening and offering useful reflections of themes I may notice, including any changes over time. I ask clients questions that encourage them to think about their experiences in new ways and never judge or lead anyone into talking about something uncomfortable.

My role, as a psychodynamic therapist, is to provide an environment that is confidential and safe. This is why I do what I do. I provide an outside perspective to help you understand how your past influences present behaviours; your use of defences to avoid reality and awareness of how unconscious reoccurrence operates in your life. With your assistance my aim is to develop different strategies in making better choices to existing problems and explore beliefs of past feelings, memories. This doesn’t mean all your life is broken, but certain grey areas compromising the relationships you’re having with self and others.

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I believe that today's problems can be rooted in lived experiences or past traumas. With careful excavation, they can be overcome when acknowledged in a confidential and safe environment and by building the therapeutic relationship within the room between you and I.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
