Life can be challenging and each stage can bring uncertainty, loss or change. With the right support at the right time, life's difficulties can become opportunities for healing and meaningful positive change. Taking the first step to seek help is often the hardest and takes courage. Yet it can set us on a different path, helping us create a better present and find the future we desire.

My clients are often people who have never really talked to anyone before. People who have been struggling but finding it hard to talk, who have been holding it all together until they can't anymore. There is no such thing as “right” or “wrong” things to talk about in therapy. Talk to me about your deepest thoughts and feelings, talk to me about sport, work, your week, your relationships, what you hate, what you love, sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.

Hi, thanks for being here! Let me tell you about myself: I am a queer cisgender woman, and I use she/her pronouns. I am also neurodivergent and an intersectional feminist. These parts of who I am naturally shape the way I work. My counselling practice is inclusive and rooted in compassion. I aim to offer a space where you will be seen, heard and accepted just as you are. Being queer and neurodivergent myself, I know what it can feel like to exist between worlds, to mask, to question belonging, and to be misunderstood. These experiences have inspired me to focus my practice on LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent individuals.

Do you often ask yourself: ‘What is happening to me? I just don’t recognise myself anymore’. Old ways of living and coping with life’s stressors have simply stopped working and you find yourself at a crossroads. You may have lived through a difficult experience or other significant life event that has left you feeling vulnerable and scarred. There may be new health, relationship or work challenges now that you simply don’t know how to resolve or something inside you has ‘snapped’ and says: ‘I’ve had enough’

Are you feeling that you need a supportive relationship to help with issues in your life? At different times in life we may feel overwhelmed, alone or stuck and it can help to talk in a non judgemental setting. You may be considering therapy for many reasons and the first step is to just make contact. This can bring feelings of nervousness but it can also be a very exciting moment. You can ask for the help and support you need. It’s very important that you feel completely comfortable with your counsellor, that they are a person you can share all of yourself with.

I work with a wide range of diverse needs and people, but particularly those struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, poor self-esteem and the feeling that they are just not good enough. Many of the people I work with find themselves feeling constantly anxious - worrying about what other people think of them, trying to keep everyone happy or believing they are flawed and not good enough. They are often exhausted and frustrated that they can't find a way to break free from this.

Know thyself is an ancient aphorism that encourages individuals to explore and gain a deeper understanding of themselves. The phrase dates back to ancient Greece, where it was inscribed on the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. At its core, know thyself is a call to introspection, self-awareness, and personal growth. It encourages you to look within, explore your thoughts and emotions, and gain insight into their motivations, values, and beliefs. By knowing yourself, you can better understand your strengths and weaknesses, make more informed choices, and live a more authentic and fulfilling life.

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
