Hi, my name is Laura Turner and I am an experienced Clinical Psychologist, with training in Cognitive Analytic Therapy. Sometimes people can find themselves stuck in patterns of thinking, feeling and doing and may struggle to know what is preventing them from moving forward and making change. You may be feeling stressed or anxious, experiencing low mood, problems with
sleep
or be having difficulties in your relationships, at work or with your health. You may have experienced difficult or traumatic events, either in the past or more recently and these may be impacting how you cope, keeping you stuck in negative patterns.

Hello, I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, CAT Therapist and Coach. I am passionate about working with people in the way that they find most helpful. We can all find ourselves at a point in our lives when things are not how we’d like them to be. We can be caught up in negative patterns, experience difficult symptoms (such as struggling with
sleep
or anxiety, feeling low or stressed) and have difficulties with our relationships, work or our health. We may have experienced something traumatic or stressful that we struggle to cope with or find ourselves caught up in a negative situation that we don’t seem to be able to escape.

Our aim (you and I) is to improve your overall wellbeing, including relationships,
sleep
, confidence, lower stress and much, much more! My work within local and national services has been to support those who have experienced domestic abuse as well as control and coercion as well as many other issues.
People come to counselling for many different reasons; they may have lost their way in life or their passion and enthusiasm for the things that used to bring them joy. For all of those people who hope I will have all the answers, I don't! Nor do I have a magic wand and I will not tell you what to do, but... I WILL however, share any knowledge and resources I have with you to hopefully alleviate any emotional distress you are facing. Together we will develop your own set of skills and tools to use when necessary. I WILL offer you a safe and non-judgemental space, where you will be heard and understood, valued and respected.

Hey There, Trauma can present as symptoms connected to nervous system disregulation, such as anxiety, depression, low mood, negative thinking, destructive behaviour, difficulty in experiencing emotion, lack of drive and enthusiasm, isolation, a lack of trust in others and a fear of connection or poor relationships, dissociative tendencies and hyper sensitivities. I work with cutting edge methods including Brainspotting and the SSP (safe sound protocol) (polyvagal theory) that are grounded in the most recent developments in neuro science and how we understand the impact of our early environment on our here and now adult experiences.

Unhelpful thoughts and uncomfortable feelings are part of being human. Sometimes however, we can get stuck in a painful vicious cycle by reacting in unhelpful ways. This doesn’t mean we’re broken. If you’d like to learn new ways of responding to these thoughts and feelings then maybe I can help. I have a lot of experience assessing and treating a wide range of problems using CBT. I use a range of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy and mindfulness tools to enhance and compliment traditional CBT. I find this approach extremely effective in helping people to recognise and break unhelpful patterns, overcome problems and prevent relapse.

You may have been thinking about therapy for a while and wondering if it is the right thing for you or even the right time for you. The fact that you are reading this now is a first step in helping you to make the decision to contact a therapist. The difficulties you have been experiencing recently or maybe ongoing for a while, may be related to anxiety, depression or trauma. You may have lost your connection with yourself and be feeling unsure about your capabilities in some aspect of your life. The global pandemic may have added further anxieties into your life making coping more difficult.

I have a deep trust in the healing capacity that a counselling relationship can provide. I believe each individual brings with them their own qualities & experiences, everyone is unique. Seeing beyond labels to the person, I recognize that it is the individual that knows themself best. I strive to build relationships in which clients say they feel empowered & listened to as I offer an attentive, understanding and accepting space. The nature of my counselling practice allows the individuals I work with to acquire compassion & gentleness for self, to develop healthy boundaries that allow personal growth and healing.

Sometimes in life we encounter difficulties and struggle to make sense of things, at times like these it can be helpful to talk to someone. Counselling offers a confidential relationship where people can reconnect with themselves. In this safe place people can begin to put their thoughts and feelings into words, opening up new perspectives on experiences, allowing people to move forward towards positive change. Our work together will help you to become clearer about what matters most to you, uncover a truer sense of who you are and what gives you real meaning and satisfaction in your life.

Do you find that despite your very best efforts to cope with difficult thoughts and feelings such as anxiety, depression and/or anger, your difficulties are still holding you back? Do you find that your ways of coping can make things worse in the long-term? You may be finding that your relationships with others are suffering as a result, and you might be finding it difficult to talk to friends and family about your difficulties. Are you struggling to find a way to move forward? Do you feel like you’ve lost touch with what’s important to you, and lost your sense of direction in life?

For some time now you might have been struggling to make sense of how you are feeling and wish to talk things through with a professional. This could relate to difficulties with your mood and some behaviours you are not happy with and want to explore and work on these. Perhaps this was because of a recent event, or something that is related to your early childhood experiences, or even a combination of different life circumstances. You may be thinking that despite already seeking help for some of the issues that you have been facing, you feel unfulfilled and think that something is missing in terms of healing.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
